By all accounts thus far, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is a superb YA adaptation, which will probably make a killing at the box office, much like its predecessor. This is not a good thing. Spurred on by its success, you can expect to see YA adaptations up the yazoo, despite the fact that most of them – like the other two major adaptations of 2013, The Host and The Mortal Instruments – qualify as cruel and unusual punishment.

And the latest attempt to challenge that pitiful YA adaptation track record is director Neil “Limitless” Burger’s Divergent.

DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a future where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

Holy powerful pugilism, Batman! Did that guy just knock over 5 people – even the people behind and next to him – with a single punch? Maybe I should start taking this movie more seriously instead of just thinking of it as “Frumpy Mary Jane Watson wants to find herself, finds tattooed bad boy, she frowns, he flirts, revolution, the end”?

Nah, I think that sounds about accurate.

Divergent will be released on March 21, 2014.
