A new year, a new start for the box office! Although the more some things change, the more they stay the same.Leading the pack into 2013 was Disney heavyweight animation Frozen. Picking up where it left off in 2013, Frozen remained in the top spot, adding another $20.7 million to the coffers and settling down for a current global tally of $639.9 million so far. The only new contender opening up 2014 was the latest Paranormal flick, The Marked Ones.

Feeling the chill, the latest Paranoraml flick scared up $18.2 million, which is seeing each successive entry in that series losing more and more cash on opening weekend. Paranormal Activity 3 holds one of the higher openings at $52.7 million, while Paranormal Activity 3 saw a sharp decline with an opening of $29 million back in 2012. Here’s how everyone else did over the first weekend of 2014:

  • Frozen – $20.7 Million
  • Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones – $18.2 Million
  • The Hobbit: The desolation of Smaug – $16.2 Million
  • The wolf of Wall Street – $13.4 Million
  • American Hustle – $13.2 Million
  • Anchorman 2: The Legend continues – $11.1 Million
  • Saving Mr Banks – $9 Million
  • The secret life of Walter Mitty – $8.2 Million
  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – $7.4 Million
  • Grudge Match – $5.4 Million

Top ten departures this week include Walking with Dinosaurs and the Keanu Reeves actioner 47 Ronin. It’s been a bad showing so far for that action spectacle. After two weeks, the best spot that 47 Ronin could claim so far was number 9 on the top ten, and it’s got a paltry $83.9 million to match so far, based on international combined ticket sales.

It’ll probably be one of the worst performing big budget films leading into 2014, but stay tuned for later this afternoon, when we examine those specific films with a more in-depth magnifying glass.
