It used to be that comic book movies would attract talent that had seen better days, only for those actors to get a surge of popularity that reignited their careers. These days though? Those films are attracting the cream of the acting crop.

Well, button down your eye of Agamotto, because the Phase 3 movie, Doctor Strange, may have just attracted a massive catch in the form of Johnny Depp.

According to Latino Review, who have a solid record with this kind of thing, the Pirates of the Caribbean star is being talked to about donning the red cape of the Sorcerer Supreme for a film that will follow after the Avengers: Age of Ultron, once Iron Man is no longer the star of that cinematic universe.

As much a fan as I am of Depp and his acting, my only concern here is longevity. Such roles are rigorous work, and you need a young actor for the role. And granted, Depp doesn’t look his age of 50 thanks to Hollywood magic, but you need an actor who is committed to the role for several sequels and tie-ins, especially with the Marvel phase films. What Depp brings to the table however, is star power for a character that isn’t as widely recognised as Spider-Man or Iron Man.

Combined with a rumoured strong script that dips further into the mysticism well of those comic book properties, and Doctor Strange could be the new breakout success of Marvel movies. If Depp is chosen, let’s hope that he’s in it for the long run.

I think if you tip the hard drive some of the data pours out. I don’t know, I’m not very technically inclined.

There’s actually not that much complex backstory to Strange, which could be a huge selling point. Essentially, he’s an arrogant, money hungry, world class neurosurgeon, who loses the ability to perform surgery after his hands are damaged in a drunk driving car accident. Desperate to reclaim his former life he starts researching ways to fix his hands, including searching the mystic arts all over the world.
After bankrupting himself looking for a cure to no avail, he meets an old hermit named the Ancient One in the Himalayas who is actually the Sorceror Supreme, the greatest magician on Earth. The Ancient One can heal him, but refuses due to Strange’s arrogance.
Sensing that he has a good side though after Strange stops the Ancient One’s apprentice, Mordo, from killing him, the Ancient One decides to rather take Strange under his wing and in so doing teaches him not just humility and respect for all life, but also a whole lot of badass magic, which he used to keep the Earth safe from all kinds of supernatural nasties, even becoming an occasional Avenger eventually.
Eventually, when the Hermit passed away, the title of Sorceror Supreme and all the magical gifts that come with it, was bestowed on Strange.

Yeah, he has a pretty standard origin story. What made him stand out was the heavy mystical slant of his adventures, which often got pretty dark.

Yeah. I see he spends most of his time traversing different realms. Nice to have something like that I think!

I wonder if they’re going to go with magic, or resort to it being some kind of techno-babble. They haven’t hinted at the supernatural before that I can recall.

That is a good question. Thor was supposed to be the intro to the supernatural, and although there are some hints of it, there’s also the argument that its just really, really advanced tech.

That’s the way I saw it. I’m guessing there would have been a massive outcry if they presented him as an actual god instead of an alien.

But he isn’t an actual god in the comics, so there would of been an outcry, from the fans!

Thor is a full on god in the comics. How Marvel cleverly got around it in the movies is by saying that he has godlike abilities, and he’s worshiped as a god by many, including the Nordic people of Earth, but he’s not actually a god, just a member of a race of beings from another realm who have set themselves up as protectors of all the realms. Like gods. 😉

No, in the comics he is often referred to as a god, and the people of earth think of him as a god, and the asgardians are so vain they think they are gods, but they are not. They’re another race of people that are super powerful that live in another realm. They may have god-like powers, but the asgardians are not technically gods. Marvel has many races that are as powerful, and several much more powerful, than the asgardians.

Nope. Thor is definitely a full-on god in the comics (at least in the Marvel 616 universe, to a slightly lesser extent in the Marvel Ultimate Universe). He’s part of an entire pantheon, they have their own creation myth, etc. In fact the most recent iteration of the comic under writer Jason Aaron has been all about reaffirming Thor’s godhood.

As long as he stays off those Jack Sparrow crazy pills he’s been popping for the last few years, this could work really well.
