BATMAN VS SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE rumour update: Shooting back to back? Dwayne Johnson, Jason Momoa, Josh Holloway attached?

Looks like the folks at Warner Bros\DC have got tired of their marvellus mousy competition hogging all the good rumour headlines this week, so along comes a few potential firecrackers of their own. Now these rumours have not been offficially confirmed in any way, but if one of them in particular turns out to be true, it would certainly explain why everybody and his cape-wearing dog appears set to turn up in Batman vs Superman.

Before we get to that though, first up is the news from ComicBookMovie that Lost alum Josh “Sawyer” Holloway is up for a role in Batman vs Superman. I’ve stated on a few occasion that out of the entire Lost cast, I would have picked him as the one to most easily make the transition to big time movie star, but instead he’s been very absent in the entertainment biz. However, with his recently begun high-tech spy drama show Intelligence, which was the most watched TV premiere in the US this year, maybe he’s finally making a bid for the limelight. And what better way to do it, than in a MASSIVE superhero epic, which irrespective of whether it’s actually any good or not, is guaranteed to make tons of cash and garner a whole lot of exposure. The role he’s supposedly up for is unknown, but just on physical appearance alone, he’d make a superb pick for a certain King of Atlantis. Well, he would if it wasn’t for another rumour.

You may recall that a while back word came down that Game of Throne’s Khal Drogo himself, Jason Momoa, was also headed to the Man of Steel sequel. At the time it was believed that he may be taking on some kind of supporting villainous role. We heard absolutely nothing from Momoa himself about this, when all of a sudden a few days ago he started outright denying his involvement every opportunity he got, claiming it was all just rumour. And right as his denials began, Badass Digest posted a story, which they claim comes from “a very, very trusted source,” stating that not only is Momoa definitely in the film, despite his contradictory protests (remember, we’ve seen actors outright lie about castings several time), but he’s actually being looked at to play Aquaman. So why all the suddenly very vocal denial? Because apparently the character was to be a secret cameo.

Now, before the internet rednecks start jumping up and down, yes, I know that Momoa is not the blonde, blue eyed Aquaman that you conventionally think of and for whom Holloway would be a pretty good match for, but lighten Momoa’s hair a bit, have him grow a viking beard and stick a hook on his right hand, and tell me he couldn’t superbly pull off the badass Aquaman from the 90’s?

Moving on before all the Aquaman purists – all two of you – call me crazy, we get to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who recently revealed that he was doing something DC Comics related for Warner Bros. Now he was tapped to play Lobo for the longest time before that project fell apart, and he has previously been attached to play Black Adam in a Shazam movie, which also got shelved, so he definitely has some history with WB\DC. And according to a story from Latino Review, he’s getting another chance with Justice League. What’s more, it seems that WB\DC have also realised that Johnson is essentially walking franchise viagra, and want him to play Green Lantern. Johnson donning the green ring would certainly go a long way to wash the taste of Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern out of audience’s mouths. The only problem with this rumour – and why I find it unlikely – is which Green Lantern would he play? He sure as hell won’t be Hal Jordan (the character Reynolds played). Jon Stewart – who was actually the Green Lantern of choice for George Miller’s aborted Justice League flick – is probably the closest physical match, but even that’s a bit of a stretch.

However, the second part of Latino Review’s rumour, and which I would buy far more easily, even in spite of LR’s confession that most of this revelation is from is a combination of insider information and good old fashioned speculation from folks who’ve been in the game a long, long time”, is the claim that WB\DC actually intend for Batman vs Superman and Justice League to shoot back to back, sort of as sequels. This would go a long way to explain the necessary presence of all these heroes, as essentially they would all be popping up at the tail end of Batman vs Superman, introducing some story element that would lead right into Justice League where they would all be together. On top of that, by shooting back to back, WB\DC could essentially have Justice League ready to roll in 2016, not only capitalizing on audience’s still fresh excitement for the brand, but also rapidly clawing back a bit of the superhero movie dominance that Marvel currently enjoys.

Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci has also added his vindication of this rumour, saying the trusts Latino Review’s sources on this rumour, and honestly it just makes a whole lot of sense. The only question, which he also raises, is who would direct? To make Batman vs Supermans 2015 release date, director Zack Snyder would probably be tied up in post-production from the moment the film’s last day of filming wraps, so despite the fact that he’s been shepherding this world until then, it would take him out of the running if WB\DC actually do go this route.

There is obviously the giant, black spandex wearing elephant in the room in the form of a two time Oscar winning director in Ben Affleck, the guy that will be on set anyway as he just so happens to also be Batman. I mean, there wouldn’t be much more that WB\DC could do to reassure fans of the supposed quality of Justice League, than by putting Affleck behind the camera. I mean, the man has done his very best work when he’s been busy on both sides of the lens. His directing style would be a massive departure from Snyder’s usually bombastic approach, but he’s talented enough to not only adapt, but make it work well.

What do you guys think? Affleck directing Justice League? And who do you think Josh Holloway, Jason Momoa and Dwayne Johnson should play if they turn out to definitely be in this?

My only problem with Josh Holloway is that he seems to only have one accent. In Intelligence he sounds identical to the way he did in Lost. So I’d choose Jason Momoa for Aquaman because I don’t picture him as having a Southern accent. The Rock should be Martian Manhunter, GL doesn’t need giant muscles.

Well we’ve just seen Holloway in Lost and Intelligence, so he hasn’t really had to show much range. I could be wrong and will have to rewatch to verify, but for his role in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, he didn’t have the Southern accent.
