Brushless motors, the same broad type found in drones and PC cooling fans, have made their way into the bathroom. A compact, fast motor can help a modern hair dryer deliver strong airflow without a bulky body.
Here’s what is going on inside one, and which specs deserve your attention when you shop.
What Makes a Hair Dryer High-Speed
A high-speed dryer uses a compact motor and fan to create airflow. Moving air carries moisture away from the hair, while heat helps water evaporate. The amount of air and its temperature both affect the result.
Brushless motors use electronic controls to direct current flow through the motor windings instead of mechanical brushes. According to Texas Instruments’ overview of brushless DC motors, the compactness of the motor combined with increased efficiency provides an advantage over traditional brushed motors. However, this explanation does not provide evidence that a specific dryer will outperform another based upon the technical specifications provided.
The speed of the motor is specified in revolutions per minute (RPM). Dreame states that the Pocket Pro features a 110,000 RPM motor. It is a useful specification, but it does not account for the airflow at the area being dried or the length of time required to complete your hair-drying routine. In addition to motor speed, other variables such as the fan, nozzle, heat selection and quantity of hair affect the final outcome.
Heat Control Matters Alongside Motor Speed
In addition to motor speed, temperature control is a critical specification to consider. Using sensors along with electronic controls enables the dryer to monitor the heating element and maintain the selected heat output. These types of sensors do not necessarily measure each individual strand of hair.
According to Dreame, the Pocket Pro incorporates smart heat control and ionic care. Additionally, Dreame indicates that its larger Miracle Pro features automatic adjustments to airflow and temperature. While ionic care is supposed to decrease static electricity and flyaways, it cannot be assumed that it protects your hair from heat damage.
The American Academy of Dermatology’s advice on avoiding hair damage recommends using the lowest heat setting and letting hair air dry when possible. Having a temperature sensor does not remove the need to use a dryer carefully.
Compact Doesn’t Have to Mean Weak
A smaller motor can help designers make a dryer more portable. Whether it is comfortable to use depends on the rest of the design, including the handle, weight distribution and attachments. A folding handle is a separate feature, so do not assume that every compact dryer folds.
Dreame lists a foldable body, styling attachments and dual-voltage compatibility for the Pocket Pro. Before travelling, check the voltage range on the exact model you buy. You may still need a suitable plug adapter even when you do not need a voltage converter.
Dreame’s look at the Pocket Pro as a compact hair dryer for fast styling explains why a folding dryer suits travel and small bathrooms, and how it handles quick touch-ups between the gym and the office.
What to Check Before You Buy
When evaluating high-speed dryers go beyond reading about the motor speed. Here are five checks you can make to compare products:
- Motor and airflow. Check for airflow details and drying test information alongside RPM figures. RPM figures alone don’t establish which product is fastest.
- Heat control. Check if you can adjust the heat down to a lower temperature and see if the company describes how their model will automatically regulate itself.
- Attachments. Verify that you get everything in the box. A concentrator and a diffuser are two different tools that help you style your hair differently and not all models come with both.
- Weight and balance. How heavy does the dryer feel? How balanced does it feel when you attach the nozzle? Can you comfortably hold it for long periods?
- Voltage. Make sure it will run in your destination country and follow whatever instructions are given for your model.
Also, check noise levels and usability. CriticalHit’s earlier Dyson Supersonic review discussed how the dryer sounded and felt in use, including details that a spec sheet can miss.
Picking the Right High-Speed Dryer for Your Routine
Begin by thinking about where you typically dry your hair. If you plan on taking the dryer with you on trips, look at folded dimensions, compatible voltage and space taken up by attachments.
Dreame offers several options within their lineup including the compact Pocket Pro and full-size Miracle Pro. Think about what settings you like to use most often. Then compare those settings and attachments in relation to what you want to achieve with your hair. Motor tech is great but having a good dryer that fits well and has the right temperature controls is much better than just having an impressive RPM rating.
