Gina Carano has a lot of the tools needed to become the next big female action star: Real world ass kicking credentials, cover girl looks, and a physique that makes it look she could actually beat up a couple of NFL linebackers without being snapped in two like a piece of dry spaghetti. Steven Soderbergh recognized this and created Haywire around her, just so that she could show off these skills. While that film may not have been as wholly successful as many fans (myself included) would have hoped, it gave Carano some big screen legitimacy and she went to to kick some more ass in Fast and the Furious 6. Now she’s back with her sophomore leading lady effort, In The Blood, which just like Haywire boasts quite the cast of familiar faces around Carano, but unfortunately that’s where the good news ends.
Gina Carano stars as Ava, a trained fighter with a dark past. When her new husband (Cam Gigandet) vanishes during their Caribbean honeymoon, Ava uncovers a violent underworld of conspiracy in the middle of an island paradise. Armed with a deadly set of skills, Ava sets out to discover the truth – and to take down the men she thinks are responsible for his abduction, one by one.
Yeesh, I have a feeling that going toe to toe with Carano in a real fistfight would be a lot less painful than listening to those stock punch sound effects. Combine that with some of the shots shown here, and there’s an undeniable cheapness to In the Blood that not even the presence of Stephen Lang and Danny Trejo can rectify. Carano’s acting is clearly also still pretty pedestrian, so I’m not expecting this one to be anything more than some fisticuff eye candy.
In the Blood is directed by John Stockwell (Blue Crush, Turistas) and is set for release in theaters and on VOD on April 4, 2014.

I didn’t enjoy Haywire, had way too many pregnant pauses & meaningful looks.
