MINORTY REPORT and THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE headed for television

Please allow me to introduce myself: I’m a television spin-off of wealth and taste. Well, here is hoping: a television series based on the 1997 hit The Devil’s Advocate is in the pipeline, with a pilot script already written. The story, according to Deadline, will follow the same concept as the original film, where a young hotshot lawyer takes up a job at a law firm that, unbeknown to many working there, is run by the devil himself.

Don’t get too excited – the show has been optioned by NBC, which means we are securely in Network TV territory here. That translates to PG-language, family-friendly nudity and only suggestive evil – not exactly the best place for old Lucifer to strut his stuff . Maybe it will be like Suits or Boston Legal, and William Shatner will play the fallen angel shoving that smug Harvey guy down a postage chute. I’m obviously just guessing, but this isn’t making my list of exciting TV news. Then again, maybe I’m still just angry about the Dusk To Dawn pilot…

Another huge cinematic hit is also headed to the small box, at least if you can believe “an individual familiar with the project” who told The Wrap that

Steven Spielberg is developing a TV series based on his 2002 hit sci-fi movie “Minority Report” that will be written by “Godzilla” scribe Max Borenstein and produced by Amblin Television.

Yay? I’m not sure – Spielberg’s TV ventures have largely been pretty but dumb. Amblin TV produces close-but-no-cigar efforts like Terra Nova, The Borgias, Under The Dome and the really, really, truly, incredibly (f***) awful The River. On the other hand, apparently The Americans is not bad at all.

Not that this is confirmed – The Wrap couldn’t get anything from Steven or his people, so maybe it’s just a dirty old rumour. But speculation is that it will focus on the movie’s PreCrime squad, which uses psychic teenagers in a dipping pool to predict if you are going to kill your spouse or lie on your tax return.

Now I am all for more science fiction on TV, providing it doesn’t suck (et tu Revolution?) and it doesn’t get screwed over like Almost Human by networks showing episodes out of sequence.

  1. Actually, i think Minority report could work as a CBS Procedural… It’ll be like Criminal Minds or CSI… except more balls…

Devil’s Advocate could work, NBC are responsible for Hannibal after all. I’ll hope for the best.

Minority Report not so much, pre-crime of the week will bore me to death.
