The box office belonged to two new films this weekend in North America, with the race for number one being one of the closest ties in recent history. Nightcrawler narrowly edged out Ouijia with a $9000 kead to take first place, leaving the low budget horror in a decent second place finish.

Not that first place meant much. Nightcrawler is a noticeably lower debut for star Jake Gyllenhal than in recent films such as End Of Watch ($13.2 million), Drive ($11.3 million) and behind John Wick’s opening of $14.4 million. Ouija meanwhile, managed to make some decent bank despite terrible reviews, word of mouth and the fact that nobody really watches horror movies a night after Halloween. It did remarkably better than the re-release for the first SAW, which bombed with a haul of $650 000 across over 2000 cinemas across the US of A. Here’s a look at how everyone else did:

  • Nightcrawler – $10.9 Million
  • Ouija – $10.9 Million
  • Fury – $9.1 Million
  • Gone Girl – $8.8 Million
  • The Book Of Life – $8.3 Million
  • John Wick – $8 Million
  • St Vincent – $7.7 Million
  • Alexander’s too damn long film title – $6.4 Million
  • The Judge – $3.4 Million
  • Dracula Untold – $2.9 Million

Top ten departures this week include only one film, and that’s The Best Of Me. The romantic drama failed to stir up any intimate feelings at the box office, ending a worldwide run with a mere $25.9 million banked, off of a $26 million budget. Love hurts.
