I never actually made it more than about 30 minutes into 2010’s Skyline. Maybe it was due to the lack of GTR’s (stupid misleading title!) or the fact that the movie just wasn’t any good. Like, no good. Yes, the super polished level of CG special effects that co-directors Greg and Colin Strause were able to squeeze out of just a $10 million budget was ridiculously impressive, but just about everything else about the flick was mediocre to terrible. That micro-budget approach helped the film to still be a box-office success though (it pulled in just shy of $80 million) despite being savaged by critics, meaning that four years later, we’re now getting a sequel.

And much like he did with the sequel to The Purge, rapidly in-demand action man Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) has been tapped to lead this levelled up sequel as “a detective who fights to free his son from a terrifying alien warship”. Variety reports that just like The Purge: Anarchy, Beyond Skyline will be taking place at the same time as the original, but will be expanding the scope.

Part of that increased scope comes in the addition of The Raid and The Raid: Berandal stars Iko Uwais – who plays “leader of an underground resistance that forms after aliens touch down on earth” – and Yayan Ruhian. The pair will not only be acting in the film, but Variety also reports that they will also serve as the film’s fight choreographers. Yes, fight choreography, because according to Greg Strause “we’re showcasing a new kind of alien combat, so who better to collaborate with than the most innovative fight team in the world?”

Alien combat? Say what?! (Maybe that JJ Abrams and his Kryptonian Kung Fu was just ahead of his time, after all!) I have a feeling that with Uwais and Ruhian on board, some very, very nasty things are going to be done in that arm-blade-thing shown off in the film’s post poster viewed below.

While still producing and still having their VFX company Hydraulx handle the film’s shiny bits, the Strause brothers will no longer be directing. They’ve handed over the baton to Liam O’Donnell, who actually co-scripted the first film, and will once again be penning the sequel with original writing partner Joshua Cordes. The film is currently in pre-production and cameras are set to start rolling next month in Indonesia and Singapore.

Frank Grillo needs to star in a movie with Ralph Macchio where they’re assassins hunting each other down and then they find out that they’re actually brothers. Cos they fucking looking exactly alike

    How and why?

This should’ve just been the entire cast of Scrubs fighting off an alien invasion. I would love a showdown between the overlord and Dr Cox.

Not a great movie but I LOVED the ending, my 2 cents.
