Ridley Scott won't direct BLADE RUNNER sequel, confirms Harrison Ford's involvement

Ridley Scott is a director who has reached the very top of the mountain when it comes to genre filmmaking. Unfortunately, the last few years has seen his directing career falling down that mountain like an Eddie Murphy stand-up comedy sketch.

So with that in mind, I was quite apprehensive about Scott tackling a new sequel to his seminal sci-fi classic Blade Runner, nearly 23 years after the original was released. But during an interview with Variety about his upcoming biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings – which admittedly looks great – the director reveals that he will in fact be handing the directing reins over to somebody else, and will only be producing it.

While no explicit reason for him abandoning the director’s chair is given, it might have something to do with the fact that Scott wants the film to go into production in 2015. He will soon start work on his Matt Damon led sci-fi thriller The Martian, and then appears to want to get cracking on Prometheus 2 straight thereafter. That leaves virtually no room in his schedule for next year for another Blade Runner flick.

Just who will be directing Blade Runner 2 is a mystery at this point, but at least Scott shed some light on one other aspect of the film: Will Harrison Ford’s Deckard be returning? Scott confirmed that the script that he developed with original co-scribe Hampton Fincher – which was then polished up by Michael Green – contains some Deckard gumshoe action, though he’ll be taking the stage a bit late..

“We talked at length about what it could be, and came up with a pretty strong three-act storyline, and it all makes sense in terms of how it relates to the first one. Harrison is very much part of this one, but really it’s about finding him; he comes in in the third act.”

It’s unclear whether Scott literally means that part of the story will be about somebody trying to Deckard. Seeing as how the original film ended with Deckard going heading off to somewhere unknown with Sean Young’s Rachel, this is entirely possible. What’s clear though is that he will a minimal – if significant – role in the whole thing.

I have to admit that the prospect of Scott handing this film over to somebody else, has revitalized my interest in it (even if I do still find the prospect of a Blade Runner sequel unnecessary). There are a few fresh young voices in the sci-fi landscape at the moment – Rian Johnson, Alex Garland, Jake Paltrow, Mike Cahill – who I would love to see take a crack at this universe.

I am not sure. I think leave it alone. Write a new film man. Not Prometheus.

It should never have a sequel in the first place.

Its like asking Leonardo da Vinci to paint another Mona Lisa because the first one was great.

Same with The last of Us.

    RUNS…
