For some reason (I suspect too much hayfever medication), the only thing I can remember about Gallipoli, the highly acclaimed 1981 World War I drama which I watched in History class at high school, is the image of a very young Mel Gibson running breakneck between the trenches as gunfire whizzed all around him. So much running.

Now another Australian film starring another highly volatile Aussie Oscar winner will be taking on the tragic events that occurred in that Turkish peninsula. Only this time, the Aussie in question – Russell Crowe – won’t be running away from bullets, but rather running towards the answers of what happened to his sons. Luckily for those in his path he will only be wielding a pair of water divining rods and not an aerodynamic telephone.

Crowe steps behind the camera as director as well for the first time in his career, and the positional shift appears to have paid off as the film – which has already opened in its native Australia in December last year, and gone on to be the highest grossing film down under for 2014 – has garnered major awards, including winning the Best Picture at the 4th Annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.

And taking a look at this new moving trailer, its easy to understand why as we’re greeted by sweeping cinematography, a soaring score, strong looking performances, epic battles and Jai Courtney’s rather ridiculous moustache. I would give this movie an Oscar for that piece of facial landscaping alone.

“The Water Diviner” is an epic adventure set four years after the devastating battle of Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Australian farmer Connor (Russell Crowe) travels to Istanbul to discover the fate of his sons, reported missing in action, where he forges a relationship with the beautiful Turkish woman (Olga Kurylenko) who owns the hotel in which he stays. Holding on to hope, and with the help of a Turkish Officer, Connor embarks on a journey across the country to find the truth about the fate of his sons.

The Water Diviner  also stars Olga Kurylenko, Ylmaz Erdogan and Cem Yilmaz. It is scheduled for wider international release as from April 24, 2015.
