Man, oh man. Reboot. A word that adequately describes the last couple of years at the movies. That and “prequel” of course. Well this time the sad victim is Poltergeist, a movie from the 80’s that had me bloody terrified as a child and also had me wondering why my mother let me watch it in the first place (where were the social workers when I needed them?!). The first movie was an awesome gritty fest that reveled in its over-the-top nature and jump scare tactics, things that were not a standard of the industry back then and which, sadly, are now.
So it’s with much sadness that I bring you the first trailer for the unnecessary new Poltergeist movie. It contains a deep voice narrating, new advanced special effects, a big screen TV that makes the original movie look like it was funded by a sub-committee from a Carrie prom night and enough jump scares to make you number than Darryn after he watched Transformers 3. So it’s gotta be great, right?!
Did I say it’s also in 3D? IT’S ALSO IN 3D! It looks like the IP was probably up for grabs and someone wanted some more cash to pay for all the psych sessions they’ve needed since filming the first iteration of the film. Yeah, that’s how impressed I am with it. Have a look and see for yourself.
The new-and-improved Poltergeist is directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) and stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and Jane Adams. You can expect it to arrive at the cinema on 22 May.

WHAT! It’s almost like you can’t reboot a movie into critical acclaim anymore!!

Stop being pessimistic for the sake of it. The Evil Dead reboot was great, and this one’s looking good as well. It even has Sam Rockwell on board! I’m excited.

I don’t think he’s being pessimistic for the sake of it so much as pessimistic based on the trend of remakes and reboots and prequels of recent years being soulless cash-ins made by commitee that aren’t entertaining and ultimately are pretty forgettable, didn’t need to be made and could have had their budgets better used for something original and better.
It’s frustrating that there are probably far better scripts not being produced because Hollywood feels safer playing with existing IP.
Remakes aren’t bad in and of themselves; that they are often lackluster is what is bad and that Hollywood seems to be eating itself rather than making something original is worse still

What you said. I am tired of all the remakes. It also doesn’t look that good, the director looks like he is throwing in tired old techniques to get scares. More flash and more CGI doesn’t make a movie better, it makes it more in your face.

I am not being pessimistic for the sake of it. I honestly can say this trailer looks like the director has taken the ‘make it bigger makes it better’ approach. Not interested.
