Doodoodooodoo! Dooodooodooodoo! Wheeeheeeheeeheee! If your parents were irresponsible and didn’t pay attention to what you watched, then chances are that you grew up watching an episode or two of The X-Files that terrified the sleep out of you, or the ability to get out of bed to go and take a wizz in the middle of the night.
And that’s exactly what that damn space ghost episode did to me when I saw it, as The X-Files was a cutting edge blend of investigative drama, conspiracies and freaky phenomena that was actually grounded in some sort of reality. The show did lose its way in the later seasons, but it still stands as a top notch series with many great episodes attached.
Fans have been clamouring for a revival of the series, starring regulars David “Fox Mulder” Duchovny and Gillian “Dana Scully” Anderson. And it looks like their wishes are coming true as per TV Wise:
Fox is close to giving an official green-light to a revival of their iconic science fiction series, which originally aired between 1993 and 2002. Per sources, the network has settled on a “short-stack” order for the revival and while the exact size of the order is yet-to-be-determined, I’m told it will be less than ten episodes.
This all falls in line with comments that hand model extraordinaire Duchovny made back in January:
“I’m assuming that it will happen sooner rather than later now. We’ll see what form, how many (episodes). Certainly I can’t nor would I be interested in doing a full season. It will be in some kind of limited form. We’re all old, we don’t have the energy for a full season.”
I’d love to see the show return, especially if it went back to its weekly monster roots and ditched the alien conspiracy, or at least properly wrapped it up. And I think a limited order of episodes could do more good than harm. Look at shows such as True Detective and Sherlock, which manage to tell a convincing story without a 13 episode run. If the X-Files can emulate some of that success, then I might just have to get ready to train my bladder to survive an entire night again without any relief due to some good ol shock and awe.

A short run doesn’t make much sense to me. The goalpost has already been shifted several times by the likes of Supernatural, Fringe and lately Constantine. That leaves it with the overarching Alien Invasion plot, which as you say wasn’t that great. And the last movie, which was just an overlong episode, tells me the spark has gone out of this.
Nah, rather leave it on the shelf.
