Normally we try and inject a witty reference to a trailer in the headline, but I’m at a bit of a loss here since Hot Pursuit has a really unremarkable trailer. But that doesn’t mean it will be a bad movie.
Gender reversal is becoming a prominent and welcome trend in the movie business. Much as I have my concerns about the new Ghostbusters, it’s not due to its all-female cast. And The Heat was a lot of fun. So in the tradition of the latter comes Hot Pursuit.
We know the plot: a movie odd-couple has to team up against everyone else and will need to do what it takes to achieve whatever it is they are supposed to. In this movie it’s Reese Witherspoon as a rookie cop and Sofia Vergara as the federal witness she has to protect. The cartel, crooked cops and eventually the whole system come after them, sparking a manhunt. As the trailer shows, it’s the familiar dish of quirky jokes about contradiction, cross-dressing and at least one punchline involving narcotics.
The trailer unfortunately makes this all look very typical, but I have faith in Witherspoon and Vergara to do what they do best. More of a wild card is director Anne Fletcher: her resume mainly consist out of romcoms (The Proposal, 27 Dresses) and so-so road trip comedy Guilt Trip, so this will be her first action film. But her comedy credentials are well-established, so hopefully it’s just this trailer that makes Hot Pursuit look like a complete and utter cliché.
