Furious 7 had some furious competition this past weekend in the North American box office. No wait, that’s a lie. Seriously, there was no way that Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 was going to knock this film off of the number one spot, as Furious 7 remained in control for yet another weekend of high speed chases and crashes.
Furious 7 has now crossed the $1.1 billion mark, making this the most successful franchise entry so far. That’s thanks to a great debut in international markets, which accounted for quite a bit of that total haul. What’s more, the movie made history by attaining that billion dollar status in just 17 days, which is the fastest (and furiousest) that any movie has ever done it. And Furious 7 still has two more weeks to dominate at the box office, before the next Avengers sequel presumably dethrones it.
Opening up at 3633 locations in North America, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 raked in a second place opening of $24 million. While that’s behind the $31.8 million opening of the original Paul Blart movie, it still marks the second-highest opening for a solo Kevin James movie. Top ten departures this week include While We’re Young and It Follows. Despite being a critically acclaimed and downright spooky horror flick, It Follows has only made $13.2 million worldwide so far. Expect that to change when the film hits home media however, and word of mouth spreads.
