Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Hey, Marvel! If you could make the next Punisher movie like this, that would be freaking fantastic!

  • Although it was already made public a while back, a John Wick sequel has now officially been announced by Lionsgate. I believe a “WHOO HOO!” is in order, so: “WHOO HOO!”. Keanu Reeves is confirmed to be returning alongside directing duo Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. Lionsgate executive Jason Constantine (yes, that’s his surname; no relation to the Keanu Reeves movie) had this to say about the sequel, which he will be co-producing:

“With such tremendous fan and critical support for John Wick, we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell. We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around.”

  • Poster of the day: The Hunger Games

  • If you’ve watched Avengers: Age of Ultron and stayed for the end-credits scene, you would know have seen a person get a thing, but the thing is not apparently not in the other place we thought it was, so what gives? Well, since I’ve now officially exhausted all the ways I can talk about this without spoiling anything, I suggest you go read Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige’s explanation yourself.
  • It appears that Sean Anders likes hanging out with disgruntled people, as the Horrible Bosses 2 director has now been tapped to helm long-delayed comedy Mean Moms. And in case you’re wondering, no this isn’t a “10 years later…” sequel to Mean Girls (although I think playing a poor mother would be a cinch for Lindsay Lohan now) although both are adaptations of advice books penned by Rosalind Wiseman. Mean Moms stars Jennifer Aniston as “a happily married mother of two who moves from small-town America to the high-class suburbs and faces the cutthroat world of competitive parenting”. The comedy was originally supposed to be released this coming Friday, but was delayed last before it even went into production.
  • Man, that Disney sure as hell are going dark with the Frozen sequel.

  • The Magnificent Seven remake has already netted Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio, but it just got even more magnificent-er, as Jason Momoa and Byung-Hun Lee have now also joined the cast. Momoa, who is of course most famous for playing Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and will soon be swimming with fishes in Aquaman, is expected to play some kind of main henchman to the still uncast big villain (maybe D’Onofrio). Lee, best known as Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe movies, will play a character named Billy Rocks, which is actually all we know about him.

“I just saw the pic like a couple hours ago. It was interesting. I was frankly a little nervous about what Harley would look like, but I thought she looked really cool. So I’m optimistic, we see…

…It’s funny, because she started off as just like a one joke idea and she’s gained all these different dimensions from all the stories we did, and the stuff that happens in the comics. I think bottom line the most important thing about her is that she’s funny. One way or the other regardless of what her backstory is, or whether she’s in an abusive relationship with the Joker, or if she’s off on her own, or hanging out with Poison Ivy, or whether she’s a villain or a hero. I think bottomline her stories always have to be fun, if not flat out hilarious (but that would be even better). That’s one of the things I like about the current comic. They understand that, they’re not treating her as another angsty bizarre superhero type character. She’s really weird and funny and kind of chaotic.”

  • It may have taken a long time for us to finally see the Avengers fully assembled in a movie, but we probably need to thank our lucky stars that it took as long as it did. I mean, can you imagine if Marvel had managed to make The Avengers in the 1990’s with only the characters they had on-screen back then?

  • While Joel Kinnaman will be seen playing Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad, that role originally belonged to Tom Hardy. When he suddenly left the production a few months back, there were rumours flying around that it was due to his unhappiness with the script. Turns out though, it was just due to that age-old Hollywood malady: a scheduling conflict.

“Warner Bros. is my home studio and I love them so I was really bummed out. I wanted to work on that and I know the script is really fucking alley and I also know what’s gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won’t give away too much…it’s fucking alley. And that whole territory is something that I would certainly—I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that’s gonna, I think, be a very important film for fans.”

“There’s a very practical element as to why I’ve missed out on that foray, which is because Alejandro [G. Inarritu] has overshot by three months in Calgary, so we’ve got to go back out to Patagonia or Alaska to continue shooting The Revenant which has turned into a much bigger beast than we thought, but that also looks exceptional.”

In case you were wondering, “alley” is Hardy for “really freaking cool”.

  • At last count, Arnold Schwarzenegger has acted in about 40 movies, but who’s had time to watch all of them. And besides, we all know there wasn’t that much “acting” anyway, if you know what I mean. In fact, I think you can probably sum up all his significant roles in about… oh, say 6 minutes.
