Mad Max: Fury Road is a modern action movie masterpiece. Breathlessly frenetic, meticulously realized, it’s deceptively spartan story wrapped around the best mind-boggling vehicular action ever captured on-screen, George Miller’s long gestating fourquel is the type of fearless filmmaking that we usually just don’t see in the Hollywood studio system any more. So of course we want more of it. And Miller is more than happy to oblige.

Now the news of more Mad Max should come as no surprise to anybody that had been following Fury Road‘s tumultuous 15 year long development. Miller had originally planned to shoot two movies – Mad Max: Fury Road and Mad Max: Furiosa – back-to-back, but those plans obviously never happened. Based on how much Fury Road‘s story actually focused on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, you can probably assume that some of the ideas of the proposed latter film was eventually folded into the first.

FURY ROAD

But Miller still has even more story to tell, revealing on the Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith podcast that he not only has ideas for two more sequels, but due to the lengthy downtime offered by the countless delays on Fury Road, he has already written the screenplay for one and turned the other into a novella.

“We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays [on Fury Road] and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.”

He didn’t share any narrative details for these two movies, but revealed that the screenplay is titled Mad Max: The Wasteland and will be the next movie.

Tom Hardy has already confirmed that he has been contracted to play Max Rockatasnky for another two movies, and while there’s talk of them wanting Charlize Theron back as well (which is completely understandable since she was, in a word: awesome) she’s apparently not eager to return due to Fury Road being a hell of a difficult shoot. That and the fact that she and Hardy weren’t always ton friendly terms on set (as she told Esquire).

“We fuckin’ went at it, yeah. And on other days, he and George [Miller, the director] went at it. It was the isolation, and the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot. We shot a war movie on a moving truck — there’s very little green screen. It was like a family road trip that just never went anywhere. We never got anywhere. We just drove. We drove into nothingness, and that was maddening sometimes. And it’s material that’s really frightening — we didn’t have a script. Tom and I are actors who take our jobs seriously. Both of us want to please the directors we work with, and when you don’t know if you can deliver on that, it’s a frightening place to be — and for Tom more than me, because he was stepping into big shoes.”

Theron was so outstanding in the role of Furiosa, that I really want to see more of her character, but based on where the story in Fury Road left her (don’t worry, no spoilers here) she could easily not appear in the next film and have it be be completely Max-centric.

Either way, irrespective of who returns or what the story will actually be about, all I’m asking for are two things: That we don’t have to wait another decade and a half for the next movie, and more flame-thrower guitarist on a truck made out of speakers, please. Every movie should have one of those.

Have to agree. Furiosa was one of my favorite characters. And I never ever thought I would enjoy Charlize’s acting this much. I’ve never been a fan of her. Till now, Mad Max is my action movie of 2015.
