The biggest new release this week was Seth Macfarlane’s furry follow-up to his debut hit flick, Ted. With a sequel that was providing polarising reviews for folks who either weren’t into Macfarlane’s trademark fratboy humour or people who really wanted to see more Flash Gordon references, Ted 2 debuted in third place over the North American weekend, as Jurassic World and Pixar’s Inside Out held the first and second spots respectively.

With an estimate of $33 million on opening weekend, Ted 2 was way behind the 2012 opening weekend gross of $54.2 million that the original flick made. According to Universal Pictures estimates, Ted 2 was pegged to open the weekend at around $45-$50 million, making this Macfarlane’s second underperforming flick after A Million Ways To Die In The West. Here’s how the rest of the box office did:

ted-2

  • Jurassic World – $54.2 Million
  • Inside Out – $52.1 Million
  • Ted 2 – $33 Million
  • Max – $12.2 Million
  • Spy – $7.8 Million
  • San Andreas – $5.2 Million
  • Dope – $2.8 Million
  • Insidious Chapter 3 – $2 Million
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – $1.7 Million
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron – $1.6 Million

Top ten departures this week include Pitch Perfect 2 and Tomorrowland. Brad Bird’s enthusiastic look at the world of tomorrow only managed to rack up $201.9 million worldwide before it exited the US top ten after six weeks.

Pitch Perfect 2 on the other hand, pitch-slapped its way to a $276.7 international haul, more than doubling the $115.3 million gross of the original 2012 film. Aca-standing!
