The X-Men franchise has been a series that truly has understood the idea of evolution. It’s a theory that has allowed the films to be massively successful, while remaining mostly fresh. The original films made the superhero genre a blockbuster concept, the solo films were spin-off licenses to print money and the current First Class and Days of Future Past movies were the kind of soft reboot that the franchise needed.
Everything is coming full-circle in X-Men Apocalypse, which will see the X-Men formed for the first time. Again. Again. It is kind of convoluted. Speaking to EW, director Bryan Singer said that X-Men: Apocalypse “is kind of a conclusion of six X-Men films, yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters.” Newer actors in familiar characters such as Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) among others.
It’s pretty much a passing of the torch, as current cast members such as Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender will be saying goodbye to the franchise after this film. “This is the true birth of the X-Men,” Singer said. “This is how it happens.”
X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 27, 2016, and also stars James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Oscar Isaac.
