I really need to get myself a crystal ball, and maybe some flowing robes, because clearly I know a thing or two about predictions. Way, way back, I made a post about the Top 10 Comics Marvel Should Adapt For TV, and out of those listed we’ve already seen Powers, Jessica Jones, Heroes for Hire (which is basically Luke Cage), The Punisher (he will be the focus of Daredevil season two) and The Inhumans (which is getting a feature film, but has all its groundwork done in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). And now you can add a fifth entry to that list in the form of Damage Control.

THR is reporting that Marvel and ABC are developing a TV series around the popular comic which follows the workers of the titular fictional company in the Marvel Comics Universe whose job it is to rebuild or repair all the damage created in cities after these massive superpowered fights. And just like I predicted they should, Marvel are billing this as a comedy series! (Seriously, I really think I should start playing the lotto now)

The official blurb from THR for this new TV series adaptation lists it as focusing on the “overworked and underpaid cleanup crew of the Marvel Universe. Their specialty is dealing with the aftermath of the unique fallout from superhero conflicts, like returning lost ray guns to their rightful owners, rescheduling a wedding venue after it has been vaporized in a battle or even tracking down a missing prize African parrot that’s been turned to stone or goo. Sometimes the most important heroes are the ones behind the scenes.”

Done correctly, that certainly has the potential for some real comedic gold. Luckily they’ve brought in a few steady hands to steer this half-hour single camera comedy in the form of Ben Karlin (The Daily Show, Modern Family) – who developed the project – and David Miner (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation) who will both act as co-executive producers.

The original comic book limited series was created in 1989 by the late Dwayne McDuffie and longtime comics veteran Ernie Colón, and has spawned three further limited series over the years. In the original story, Damage Control was founded by by Ms. Ann-Marie Hoag with Tony Stark aka Iron Man and Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin each owning half the stock the company. If the TV series takes that route, then namedropping those two – or maybe even a cameo? – would possibly be a good way to tie this into the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That’s of course a universe that has been getting very crowded very quickly on the TV front, as ABC already has the aforementioned recently returned Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and also Agent Carter, while over on Netflix you have Daredevil, the upcoming Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and the still to be developed Iron Fist, followed by The Defenders mini-series which ties all the Netflix shows together.

On the other side of the tracks, DC Comics is also developing its own workplace comedy series called Powerless, so it’s a bit of a race to see which one hits their mark first.
