2016 is a big year for DC as their shared cinematic universe kicks off in earnest. While Batman v Superman: The Trailers Spoil Everything! Dawn of Justice is getting most of the headlines ahead of its 25 March release date, we shouldn’t forget Suicide Squad is also being released later in the year.

There’s even a rather brief synopsis:

A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller named A.R.G.U.S creates a task force comprised of super villains, the “Suicide Squad”. They are assigned to execute dangerous tasks in exchange for shorter prison sentences.

In a recent interview with USA Today (via Collider) director David Ayer spoke briefly about the super villain team-up and how it differs from what we’re used to seeing from superhero movies:

We all need good guys and everything — yay, good guys — but at the end of the day, they’re kinda boring. They’re always going to do the right thing. When you’re dealing with the baddies, it’s easy to get ahead of the audience and invert expectations.

Something that’s got many talking about Suicide Squad is Jared Leto’s The Joker and his rather unique take on the character as revealed in the trailer – who Ayer’s described as “transcending good and evil” and “the king of Planet Joker”. And with The Joker around, Batman is sure to follow. Ben Affleck will make a cameo in the movie as Batman and Ayer had this to say about him:

We made him fight. He’s awesome (as Batman). … You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.

Affleck himself added about his appearance in the movie:

It felt like I have such a cool cousin. This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I’ve never had that feeling.

Ayer’s also aware that as his movie is part of a shared cinematic universe, what he does affects those movies which are further down the line:

For me, it’s a little more than just dropping a cut scene in the end credits to link projects. You really have to be thinking three movies downrange and how today’s movie will impact more later-cycle projects.

Finally one more image has been released showing the team looking very worried (except for the crazy one) that they’re in a lot of trouble. From left to right are Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Deadshot (Will Smith) and Captain Aussie Boomerang (Jai Courtney):

Suicide Squad is due for release on 5 August, and I’m quite looking forward to it. How about you?
