Stephen Lang really wants to play Cable in DEADPOOL 2!

SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!

Based on its record-breaking box office performance, I’m just going to assume that you watched Deadpool this weekend past. And because you’re no noob when it comes to this whole comic book movie thing, I’m also going to assume that you stayed seated in the cinema until after the credits had rolled. And if you did then you would have seen Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool doing his meta thing and cracking wise about how post-credits scene usually set up sequels. But while Deadpool “didn’t have that kind of budget” to allow them to do a proper teaser, the Merc With a Mouth did confirm one thing: Cable was going to be in the sequel!

This should come as no surprise, as director Tim Miller had previously said that “There aren’t really many definitive Deadpool villains, apart from Cable. If we don’t put Cable in ‘Deadpool 2,’ I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail.” But while Cable’s inclusion in a Deadpool sequel isn’t exactly breaking news, casting the time-travelling mutant would be. As the Deadpool post-credits scene confirms, Miller and co haven’t got to that stage yet, but a very good pick has just tossed his hat into the ring in a big way.

After his grizzled and badass performance in Avatar, lots of fans had looked at Stephen Lang as a great choice for Cable, and it looks like he agrees as the 63-year old actor spent a large part of the weekend tweeting both pics of himself, showing off his physical readiness for the role, as well as retweeting fans calling for him to get the nod.

Well, damn. There’s certainly no denying Lang’s resemblance to Cable, nor his physical credentials and his ability to be a huge badass on-screen. And clearly he has a passion for this character, which is always a huge plus. His age is also not really a major factor due to Cable’s time-wimey back-story: He’s actually Nathan Summers, the genetically engineered offspring of Scott Summers aka Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, a genetic clone of Jean Grey. As an infant he was taken to an alternate future timeline and raised to become the adult warrior known as Cable, before traveling back through time to engage with the modern day X-Men and also lead his own X-team known as X-Force. Cable’s been jumping around through time ever since, meaning that he could really be any age when he encounters Deadpool.

Of course he’s not the only contender to the role though. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld recently revealed that his dream pick for the role of Cable would actually be Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm.

Personally, while I think Hamm is a fantastic actor, and could play a great straight man to the wacky Deadpool, I would like somebody a bit more gritty. Also, unfortunately for Liefeld’s prediction, Hamm has repeatedly turned comic book movie roles in the past saying that his career is doing quite fine without them.

There’s another option though, which I have to admit I really love – maybe even more than the idea of Lang as Cable. Before the release of Deadpool, when the inclusion of Cable in Deadpool 2 had not yet been officially confirmed, CBM went and commissioned an artist to draw up who they thought should be used for the role in the inevitable sequel: Liam Neeson.

Hot damn. Ladies and gentleman and Nick, that is Cable right there! And while Neeson might not have the musculature of Lang, at 6ft4″ he certainly could boast the physical stature necessary to play the character. Plus, he’s proven both his badass and geek credentials several times over before.

Also, my personal favourite reason for Neeson to play Cable is already included in Deadpool itself. At one point in the movie, Reynold’s Wade Wilson, worried about the terminal cancer he has, covers up his apprehension by pretending that he had a nightmare in which he kidnapped Liam Neeson’s daughter and that the Taken star was now out to get him. If Neeson should get the role, this could potentially set up exactly the type of meta fourth-wall-breaking comedy that Deadpool loves so much.

It has to be noted that both Lang and Neeson are immensely popular choices with the fans for Cable at the moment. This is incredibly relevant as very few Hollywood studio blockbusters can claim to have come into being due to almost mostly fan insistence. I mean, Fox had pretty much shelved Deadpool until the internet exploded in applause and adoration for the film’s “leaked” CG test reel. So if fans were to get just as vocal about a particular casting for Cable, who is to say that the studio won’t listen to them again?

Yes! Because I paid for the damn ticket to watch the movie, not the names of the people who made the movie!
