It looks like Sony, who has fewer franchises than most of the other big studios, is looking to set up a cinematic universe of their own built around the Ghostbusters. We know that the all-female version of the film is due to be released in July, but it appears that according to The Hollywood Reporter that they have been planning an animated movie to tie into it as well.

The studio has already created Ghost Corps, a collective including original director Ivan Reitman and star/writer Dan Akroyd to head up further expansion of the franchise. This studio is also reportedly planning a movie that could potentially star Channing Tatum and be directed by Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo. How truthful these rumours are though is doubtful, as the Russos will be stuck on the Marvel Universe for several years until at least the last of The Avengers: Infinity War films is released.

However, a move to make an animated film based on the Ghostbusters franchise is certainly more likely as it was the original animated series The Real Ghostbusters that ran from 1986 to 1991 which kept the popular story of the team going and provided a lot of further material to draw people into than what the movies covered.

It’s an interesting decision to have two distinct movie approaches to the same Universe, but it is certainly different and could work well for Sony. What is interesting is that they have apparently tapped Fletcher Moules to direct the movie. Moules is most famous as the director for the commercial spots in the also hugely popular online game, Clash of Clans. His commercials for this game have also become widely recognized and it seems have now caught the attention of a big studio who sees his potential in animation. I think its great for him – even if entrusting a relative newcomer with such a potentially big film can be seen as risky.

But hey, those risks paid off for Marvel, so maybe it will for Sony too. How the animated movie will tie into the film and whether it will focus on the female cast or introduce different characters entirely is unknown, but I’m sure we will find out in the near future.

Would you be keen to see an animated Ghostbusters movie or do you think Sony is perhaps trying too hard to create a cinematic universe with this one?

Watch how the Ghostbusters get shelved for another 30 years due to the failure of the remake.

Heres hoping it is better than the trailers.
