If you’re like me and the hordes of people around the world who binge watched and fell in love with Netflix’s Stranger Things over the last two weeks, then chances are you’re suffering from a serious episode withdrawal right now. The fantastic show was just the perfect blend of mystery, chills and thrills and a massive mountain of 80’s nostalgia. And with its first season wrapped up, there’s once again nothing else quite like it out there.

But there could be, as… Well, this is the point where I tell everyone who hasn’t yet watched the first season to please leave now. Not just because of SPOILERS but also because you need to go watch this show right damn now. The rest of you can keep scrolling past the poster below.

Okay are they all gone? Good!  Now where were we? Ah, yes! There could be more seasons of Stranger Things as the ending of the first season definitely left some dangling threads. Not to mention the mystery of exactly what the Upside Down actually is. Which is a question that definitely already has an answer as co-creator Ross Duffer explained to Variety.

There’s a lot there we don’t know or understand. Even with ‘The Upside Down,’ we have a 30-page document that is pretty intricate in terms of what it all means, and where this monster actually came from, and why aren’t there more monsters — we have all this stuff that we just didn’t have time for, or we didn’t feel like we needed to get into in season one, because of the main tension of Will. We have that whole other world that we haven’t fully explored in this season, and that was very purposeful.

We leave these dangling threads at the end. If people respond to this show and we get to continue this story — we had those initial discussions of where we might go with it. If there was going to be a season two, we would reveal more of that 30-page document, but we’d still want to keep it from the point of view of our original characters

Ross’ twin brother and co-creator Matt Duffer, elaborated on that last part to EW, comparing it to Harry Potter. No, Eleven isn’t suddenly going to return on a flying broomstick, but he was rather referring to the way you JK Rowling’s magical stroies always returned to the same characters in the same world, but now they were older and on a new adventure, and in the process allowed fans to grow up right alongside them.

“We’ve been talking about Harry Potter, even though it’s weird to compare. I like that you’re revisiting these kids and watching them grow up on a year-to-year basis.”

“If Netflix want to do [another run], Season 2 would function almost more like a sequel than it would ‘Season 2’.

Of course the end of season one sets up a couple of new mysteries for the group to solve. Like what happened to Eleven or why Will is suddenly coughing up slugs and getting into inter-dimensional bathroom redecoration. But the Duffers wanted to ensure that these were just small teases for a possible second season, and that most of the first season was wrapped up in one go.

“We didn’t want to do The Killing or the Homeland thing where you stretch one storyline out. There’s a mythology in terms of the evil that’s happening in the town that we dip our toes into this season, but it isn’t actually explored: it’s only scratching the surface of what this thing is.

Without giving anything away, when you open the door to alternate dimensions, there’s a lot you can do. We’re not really boxed in!

In fact, it appears that narrative inspiration is definitely not a concern, with the only issue surrounded whether a second season will happen being how well the show is received.

“We’re leaving that door open if people like the show.”

Oh don’t worry, we definitely like it, alright! (I geeked out over the font in the show’s titles, for crap’s sake!). Stranger Things’ 8-episode first season is currently available in all Netflix regions and is HIGHLY recommended!
