We learned a number of things surrounding the new Star Trek TV series when showrunner Bryan Fuller held a panel at Comic-Con last month. This included the show’s full title, Star Trek: Discovery (also the name of the starship featured in the show), which was unveiled via a short teaser trailer. Unfortunately the one thing we didn’t learn about Star Trek: Discovery was the one thing I wanted to know the most: exactly when in the franchise’s timeline this new show takes place.

Or maybe we did learn it, but just didn’t notice? That actually appears to be the case, but luckily the folks over at AICN were a lot more eagle-eyed and spotted a telling detail which they asked Fuller about. Here’s what the showrunner revealed.

“There’s a big clue in the number of the ship [NCC-1031] that indicates when we’re set”

If you know your Star Trek – and I admit, I’m not the biggest Trekkie around, as Star Wars was always more my thing – then chances are you would have already figured this out with that clue. For the less informed among you, the original Star Trek TV series saw William Shatner as James T. Kirk, Captain of the USS Enterprise which had the registry number NCC-1701. These numbers generally increase in chronological order as the starships get built, which means that the USS Discovery is a much earlier model. In other words, Star Trek: Discovery is more than likely set way before we ever meet Kirk, Spock, Bones, and the rest of the crew of the Enterprise.

AICN also picked up on a possible further clue in Discovery’s registry number, noting it ending in “31”. Trekkies will know that Section 31 was Starfleet’s top secret black-ops division, as seen in Deep Space NineStar Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek Into Darkness, and AICN asked Fuller if there was any connection there.

“There are aspects of our first season that, depending on how well versed you are in that mythology, you could either read into it a connection… or not.”

Damn it. So he’s still not spilling the beans. That will than likely change in just over a week’s time though, as Fuller revealed that he’s going to “spoiler it up” during the Star Trek panel of the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on August 10. We’ll be relaying all those details as soon as we get them!

sigh. When do we get one set after TNG? Lots they can do there, Dominion, borg et al established in Universe. Lots of room to play in, with lots of possibility for politics between races and so on. Also, nicer tech to play with, dammit, Spock.
