There is wrong place/wrong time and then there is Green Room. But it is one of the best things you’ll see this year.

What is it?

A punk band touring the backwaters of the US get an unexpected gig at a remote compound. Everything goes well until they witness a murder.

I will like this if I like…

Jeez, that’s tough. Certainly if you like a really good thriller or think it is impossible for a movie to still be two steps ahead of you. To reference Hitchcock is a bit old, but Hitchcockian is a movie that keeps the audience tense and in the dark through good storytelling and shocking surprises, not cheap tricks. This is totally Hitchcockian, but in a very modern way. But don’t think murder-mystery. This is all about when the chips are down.

Is it good?

Hey, I already pulled out the Hitchcock stunt, so damn right it’s good. You may have noticed the ‘What is it?’ portion is very short. That is because I absolutely do not want to give away any more than that. This is a movie where the less you know about what’s going to happen, the better. But I can add that Patrick Stewart is in it, cast against type as one of the bad guys – and owning it. It’s also a last chance to see the late Anton Yelchin in action. Everyone in this is pretty damn good.

Should I watch it?

Not if you have a faint disposition. Green Room isn’t full of gore or some take on torture porn, but it is pretty brutal. And though not a horror movie, it puts a twist on that genre too. It is not thrill kill stuff like The Purge, but turns out to be much more disturbing. The violence does not take centre stage, but it is violent. If you can handle that, Green Room is easily one of the best movies 2016 has delivered.
