When it was rumoured earlier on this year that Mel Gibson was pursuing a Passion of the Christ sequel, most people, including me were like – why? How? Does Mel Gibson have cash-flow problems? It was a story of Jesus dying on the cross, and in the end he died on the cross in one of the most graphic realizations ever put to screen, is there a need to add anything more.

Now regardless of your religious affiliations, that movie was an incredible technical achievement by Gibson and one that did incredibly well at the box office. I can understand for that latter sentiment why it is something that could be pursued and my initial concern was that this is going to simply just be a cash-in. Well the good news is, that it seems this is not the case as Gibson is just as passionate about getting this story made as he was for the first movie. And it won’t be a sequel, at least not in title.

We already knew the story was intended to focus on the days leading up to the resurrection of Jesus. And while it is indeed a continuation of the story, Gibson doesn’t want people to see the movie in this way, but rather focus on the message of the resurrection separately.

He shared these thoughts in a recent interview at the SoCal Harvest recently (as reported by Variety):

We’re talking about that. Of course that’s a huge undertaking. It’s not ‘The Passion 2’ — its called ‘The Resurrection.

I loved the first passion film ,but glad he is looking to distance this next film from that original one and give the film a more singular focus on the events. That being said, the project is stil la long way away with Gibson further saying:

That’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at, because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it. I mean, we can all read what happened, but in order to really experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s gonna take some doing

The first film received a lot of controversy form certain religious affiliations, but was overwhelmingly seeing as a hallmark movie in the Christian market for its strong realistic portrayal of the events. This next film, which will focus on the center foundation of the religion, will no doubt be even more vital to tell accurately, so it’s understandable Gibson wants to take his time with it.

Gibson regular collaborator, Randall Wallace, is still busy working on the script for the film and although no director has officially been announced, I really don’t think it is any doubt that it will be Gibson. He has the right passion and vision for the project and arguably the best director for the job.

You killed off your main character. How are you going to kill him again?
