It’s time for another dose of 80’s nostalgia. And for our young readers, no I don’t mean it’s time to sit in a fetal position again – though you may need to ask your parents about what I am going to share next. Remakes of popular 80’s cult shows seem to be becoming a regularity now, with MacGyver recently rebooted, a female Magnum P.I. on the way and now they are looking to reboot the mother of all cars, KITT, aka Knight Rider.

Well, the show was never actually about the car, but more the Hoff who played the lead character Michael Knight. Aah, who are we kidding, as a kid I watched it just for that talking and highly weaponized car. Good memories. This was also the series that brought David Hasselhoff to fame, before Baywatch came around in the 90’s and pretty much made him a household name.

Comingsoon.net is reporting that Youtube channel Machinima is going to be working with the Fast and Furious franchise’s Justin Lin – who just helped to reboot the previously mentioned MacGyver – and NBCUniversal to bring the beloved classic franchise back to life. Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein had the following to say on the plans:

Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact. Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.

I actually quite like Justin Lin as a director and with his background in Fast and Furious he will be the right person to take this on. However, I find Machinima a strange home for this kind of project. Although they are working on many similar projects and have had a lot of success, I generally find their quality not as good as some of the bigger studios. In today’s competitive market though, I’m sure that can all change and we could possibly be in for a great series.

Knight Rider will join the likes of Machinima’s Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2, Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist and Street Fighter: Resurrection, and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn on the channel which has already collectively garnered around 300 million views from these shows. It’s been a successful strategy for them so far and it would be interesting to see how their audiences take to a show that is perhaps a little older.

It’s still early days and so no formal scripts or cast is known yet. But hey, as long as they bring back KITT it could still work. That being said there was a sequel series which was released back in 1997 called Team Knight Rider which didn’t turn out so hot, so it doesn’t mean this will be a guaranteed success.

Now all I need is for someone to bring Airwolf and an A-Team TV series back and then all my biggest childhood shows can be back on TV and they can collectively ruin my memories forever…
