Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is certainly looking like it is going to be a different type of Star Wars movie. It’s the first entry in the franchise to not be released as part of the main episodic saga, with the movie instead set to tell a smaller part of the famous Star Wars mythology in more detail: Capture the Death Star schematics that set the entire events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope into motion. The movie is also going to be different in that the Rebel alliance won’t be able to rely on the Force or Jedis to bring about their salvation, seeing as they were all too busy being wiped out at this stage. So expect to see more gun and hand-to-hand combat in this movie instead.

However what also may end up being different about Rogue One is its ending. Now, I know what you’re thinking, we already know how the movie should end because that’s where the Star Wars saga all started off. Only it appears that might not be the case and we should probably expect the unexpected in the movie.

This little snippet of information came from a conversation that director Gareth Edwards recently had with USA Today when talking about Felicity Jones’ lead character Jyn Erso.

Events take place that just shatter her life and send her off to basically be raised as a soldier in the midst of a war. She ends up not the person she was supposed to be. Even though we’re not telling the story of Luke Skywalker, it was important to me that we capture the same themes and emotion. But the film doesn’t unfold how you think. It’s not the same path as Star Wars.

Not the same path as Star Wars? Now, that is a completely ambiguous line right there and probably very deliberate by Edwards as well. Does he mean that the story of the film’s heroine… is not your typical Star Wars type story or that the overall story is not along the same path as the original saga?

Well, thankfully enough, they aren’t going to deviate from the ending and this movie is still looking to faithfully tie in to the greater franchise. Phew! But the narrative route it takes to get there is possibly what could be different than what fans expect. This was revealed in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly where Edwards had the following to say:

The thing every [filmmaker] typically struggles with is ‘How does it end? But we knew how our film was going to end. Our problem became ‘How do we reverse engineer from that and know where to start?’ You’ve got a finite number of options and you go through them all like a puzzle to find the one that’s going to lead to the strongest result

I am relieved they are not looking to deviate from the original Star Wars timeline, otherwise they would’ve opened up fan hatred of epic proportion around the world. However, it does appear that Edwards and Co are not trying to stick with the typical type of storytelling we’ve seen in the past from Star Wars movies and are looking to tell the story for what it is, a standalone movie.

We always knew this film was going to be a little different than your average Star Wars film, the question is just how different will it end up being. This story of ragtag rebels who must come together against the odds for the cause of the Rebel Alliance, might not be as straightforward as the trailers make it out to be.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16th, 2016.
