With the next Oceans film, Ocean’s Eight swapping out the all-male leads for female ones, it was always going to be interesting to see what sort of story and motivation they were going to put behind the film and also to see if they would swap out the male villains too for equally feisty female ones. Well, it seems that although the Ocean’s team can equal the role of the men, the villain for this new film will still be male – because they are throwing a love spin into it all.

Variety is reporting that Damian Lewis is in final negotiations to star in the female led Oceans movie and will play the role of Bullock’s ex-lover and the target of the gang’s robbery. Part of what made the previous movies so much fun is that you will always felt the cause of the Oceans’ team was a noble one even if their methods and life of crime were less so. However with this short reveal, I’m hoping there is certainly more to it than that, because if the motivation for the casino robbery is because of some lovers squabble, I’m not sure it’s going to have the same effect at winning over the audience.

However the cast still looks exciting with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, and Sarah Paulson all starring as the criminal team. I have no doubt that we are going to get some great chemistry and performances among these leads and Damian Lewis can play a pretty convincing bad guy too, so we could have another fun caper if the script pulls it together well.

The movie is being directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) based off a script he co-wrote with Olivia Milch. Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney, who respectively directed and starred in the first three Ocean’s films, will return as producers. Ocean’s Eight is scheduled for release on June 8, 2018 – still a fair amount of time away and giving them more than enough time to learn from how not to do an all-female reboot from the recent Ghostbusters.

So it’s just an inverse of the first movie of the reboots.
