If there’s one thing that really irritates me, it’s a lack of unified account management. In a digital world, I must say that I expect it and was very surprised that my 3DS and Wii U could not share information about who I am and what games I possess. Apparently, Nintendo is aware of this issue – but that doesn’t mean they’re going to fix it.
Speaking to Destructoid, Dan Adelman (Nintendo America’s head of business development) explained that Nintendo is aware of consumer issues with the lack of a unified account system, but there really is no update on that situation:
“We don’t have anything new to announce, unfortunately, other than we’ve definitely heard that feedback many times from both inside and outside the company. It’s definitely something that we’re very much aware of. All development for the infrastructure really happens out of Japan, so we’ve kind of communicated this need in the market, and they’re very much aware of it and working towards really just always improving the eShop.”
So, the Japanese developers don’t care about making consumers happy? Or is a unified account system just not that important to them? At the moment, all games and experiences are linked to the specific hardware without any need for online registration. While this should make the DRM-phobes of the world happy, it also means that if your 3DS is stolen there is no way to recover your lost games. Additionally, despite being able to transfer saved data of the same game from your Wii U to 3DS, this is not exactly a seamless process or experience – plus you need to purchase the game on both platforms!
I’m not entirely surprised that there seems to be some apathy around this – I’m sure it’s not at the top of Nintendo’s to do list. That said, it certainly is a feature that gamers have come to expect, and it’s about time Nintendo came to the party. Like having a Facebook page, it’s not always that account management adds tons of value, it’s that you look strange without one.

Am I the only one absolutely floored by this? The development for their network infrastructure happens outside of Japan??? And….they’ve actually told those folks it’s something they want, and nothing has happened????

I think that what he meant was that all development happens in Japan, it was just phrased a bit odd, as in “it comes out of Japan”.

But how would that make any more sense, given the meaning of what he’d be saying? So it’s all in Japan, and their network infrastructure guys still haven’t done it?
Here’s my point, what else could they possibly be doing that’s more important network wise? If they’ve conveyed that desire to a group of employees right next to them….how is it not done yet??

It needs GTAV. Considering 90% of GTAV owners are 11.
