A higher key number does not guarantee a better piece of gear. Midnight Season 2 has several breakpoints in its reward curve. After the highest initial item level for Vault and dungeon loot, you are likely seeking additional challenges — such as rating or seasonal rewards — rather than necessarily better loot.
This is a breakdown of where those steps sit, what each one changes, and how to decide where to stop. That threshold is what almost every mythic boost conversation is actually about, even when it is not phrased that way.
The levels that matter
| Keystone level | What changes |
|---|---|
| +2 | Entry point. Lindormi’s Guidance active. Item level 285 is a suggested starting point |
| +5 | Xal’atath’s Bargain begins applying |
| +6 | Lindormi’s Guidance drops away; Hero-track drops begin |
| +7 | Tyrannical or Fortified enters, alternating weekly |
| +10 | Both Tyrannical and Fortified active. Myth-track Vault item; highest base dungeon item level |
| +11 | Last level where the weekly Bargain applies |
| +12 | Bargain replaced by Xal’atath’s Guile and the full timer penalty |
There are two types of progression here. One affects the type of loot you can obtain. The other impacts what the dungeon will ask your group to accomplish. At +10, you’ll need to consider both.
Why +10 is the answer for most players
Completing a +10 earns you a qualifying run for a Myth 1/6 Great Vault option at item level 318. The standard end-of-dungeon reward at +10 is Hero 3/6 at item level 311. Completing a higher keystone does not increase either starting item level.
Thus, if obtaining better gear is your objective, +10 provides you with a weekly goal. However, earning the best drop possible still requires a successful drop landing into the correct slot. In addition, there may be upgrades you wish to purchase once the drop occurs. Finally, you may also desire multiple qualifying runs to allow the Vault to provide you with choices. One +10 clear is insufficient for gearing a character.
The gearing path below it
Reaching +10 will require its own set of intermediate goals.
- Do not treat 285 as a hard minimum for +2, merely as a suggested starting point based upon experience, group composition and existing gear.
- Use earlier keys to upgrade weak spots in your current gear using Champion-track drops as opposed to moving directly upward solely due to a specific average item level.
- Champion-track drops occur at +2 through +5.
- Hero-track drops start occurring at +6.
- At +10, the Myth-track Vault slot becomes unlocked.
Complete runs that your group can reasonably perform. While beginning late may result in gaps in your equipment or knowledge of the dungeons, it does not signify that you should immediately jump into a key that you cannot currently handle. A solid completion at a lower level allows you to build upon it.
What happens above +10
While the starting item levels do not increase beyond +10, many aspects of your game may significantly alter.
Rating. There are specific rating thresholds: 1500 for Keystone Conqueror, 2000 for Master and 3000 for Legend. The regional top 1% and top 0.1% awards function differently; their rating cutoffs can shift until the season ends. Check which award you want before determining how far you will go.
Time pressure. At +12, Xal’atath’s Guile replaces the weekly Bargain. Each death reduces the timer by 15 seconds until the final minute. You lose this time in addition to whatever amount of time is necessary to recover and reassemble your group within the fight.
Group requirements. Playing with people you know makes planning easier. You understand whose interrupt will be available and when the group will use cooldowns. Familiarity helps, but you still need to learn the mechanics. A consistent team cannot compensate for an unfamiliar pull.
The affix layer in practice
When selecting a keystone level, examine the affixes. Affix layers change at certain levels:
- Prior to +5, there is virtually no weekly variance.
- Between +5 and +11, one of four variants of Xal’atath’s Bargain rotates weekly.
- Between +7 and +9: Tyrannical and Fortified alternate weekly. Both are active at +10 and +11.
- At +12 and above: Guile replaces the rotating Bargain; both Tyrannical and Fortified remain active.
The Tyrannical/Fortified rotation at +7 through +9 has impact. Between +10 and +11, both are active regardless of the Bargain. From +12 onward, focus on learning your route and how your group executes it. Waiting for a different weekly affix combination will not improve that run.
The eight dungeons
The eight dungeons include: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, King’s Rest, Temple of Sethraliss and Ruby Life Pools. Five of these originate from Midnight, including the three-boss Altar of Fangs. King’s Rest and Temple of Sethraliss were introduced during Battle for Azeroth; Ruby Life Pools was introduced in Dragonflight.
Learning each of the eight routes takes practice. Focus on the pulls that cause difficulty. Were you unable to execute an interrupt? Did additional patrols enter? Was the defensive cooldown unavailable when the boss used its dangerous ability? You must know the layout as well as how your group executes it.
Fitting it into the week
Mythic+ and raid bosses populate two distinct sections of the Great Vault. Season 2 includes the Venomous Abyss raid and the Tidebound Grotto Lair alongside its dungeons. Monitor the Great Vault while creating your schedule. The display informs you how much more you must complete to receive another choice.
Eight qualifying dungeon runs fill the three dungeon options. Four dungeon runs plus enough raid bosses can unlock more choices across the rows. The quality of those choices depends on what you complete. You select only one reward: another slot represents another choice, not another item to bring home.
What is on the test realm
Patch 12.1.5 is on the public test realm, with the single-boss Unbinding of Kith’ix raid among the content being tested. Additionally, Blizzard has detailed Ascendant Venomstones, allowing eligible weapons, trinkets and necklaces to receive future upgrades. Be aware of these developments. An anticipated release date or award on PTR does not imply that such an award will be available on live servers.
Deciding where to stop
Identify what you want this gear for. If you are preparing for Heroic raids, repeating +10s per week can be suitable along with upgrades and raid practice. If you want a seasonal title or mount, research the required criteria first. A fixed rating objective requires a different commitment from keeping up with a regional leaderboard cutoff.
You may reach the dungeon loot breakpoint before attaining your personal goals. Will continuing upward help you achieve something you still want? That is a better reason to keep climbing than feeling you ought to.
What to do when you are stuck at +10
If you find yourself stuck on +10, before queuing again, take a moment to assess your situation. A group that repeatedly disbands requires a different solution than one that continually dies on the same pull. Losing only seconds to the timer indicates you need to analyse; it does not indicate what that analysis should reveal.
Assess your gear and your run. Hero 3/6 at item level 311 is not fully upgraded. Evaluate weak points in your equipment, potential upgrades and your Vault options. Next evaluate deaths, missed interrupts and time lost between pulls. Raid loot may help, but missing the timer by a few seconds does not tell you whether your gear caused the problem.
Evaluate your team. If runs collapse in mid-dungeon due to disconnects, premature exits or arguments over route selection, attempt returning with members you have previously grouped with. Establish a route beforehand with all members agreeing on it. It avoids having similar debates within the middle of the dungeon.
Assess affixes. Both Tyrannical and Fortified are active every week at +10. The Bargain will rotate weekly until +12, so prepare for that mechanic. There will never be a boss-only or trash-only week at this keystone.
| Symptom | Possible cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow timer misses | Gear, route or execution | Review upgrades, deaths and time lost |
| Runs collapsing mid-dungeon | Group coordination | Agree a route and return with reliable players |
| Variable results at +10 | Rotating Bargain, dungeon or group | Prepare for the Bargain and review the run |
An extra attempt is useful if you learn something from it. Change a troublesome pull, assign an interrupt or upgrade a weak slot, then see how the next run goes. Doing the same thing again without looking at why it failed gives you much less to work with.
