Just a week ago Bethesda revealed the required PC specs you’d need to get The Evil Within running in all its gory glory. They were pretty damned demanding, to say the least. What if you just wanted your annual dose of horror with a little less detail and a more stable frame rate? Well, then your PC will need to be at least this high to ride.
Bethesda have updated their post, listing the absolute minimum requirements for their Resident Evil inspired title. Going from a recommendation of 4GB of VRAM down to a requirement of only 1GB is a massive jump, but overall it’s still pretty taxing. Take a look at the guts required by your rig to get The Evil Within running:
- OS: Windows 7/8.1
- GPU: GTX 460 or an equivalent 1 GB VRAM card
- CPU: i7 or an equivalent 4+ core processor
- RAM: 4 GB
- HDD: 50 GB
It’s important to note that the blog post explicitly says these requirements are for Low settings, sub-1080p gameplay. If you want to play at HD, your going to need to push things up a bit, which make these already fairly demanding specifications even scarier. I think we’re getting close to a time where 2GB of VRAM just doesn’t cut it anymore, which means a lot of people might need to upgrade over the next year.
Modern games are chewing up VRAM like it’s going out of style, and The Evil Within already recommends 4GB for the optimal horror experience. That’s already pushing Nvidia’s new Maxwell cards to the limit, so I’m not entirely sure what we’re meant to upgrade to while still being able to afford food.

Interesting though as this game is out for 7th gen consoles too, and I’m pretty sure 7th gen consoles are below those min requirements? Or am I wrong

Don’t think they’re below, but console architecture works very differently because of their unified memory structure. That’s why PC requirements, especially the VRAM, are way higher than what is needed on console to push out the same. It’s not all unified on PC.

7th Gen (PS3 and X360) are Way below that Sandy…. remember, we’re dealing with machines that are close to a decade old.

Still, the PS3 with 512MB Ram managed to run TLOU just fine.

Ah sorry, I misread and thought of current-gen. 7th Gen consoles are definitely below, but again they’re running at sub-1080p resolutions and still benefit from console architecture.

AH! Like Apple and Android the homogeneous nature of iPhone makes it much easier to create games on that platform because its standard across the board whereas Android phones fall under a broad spectrum of hardware.

Basically that. Knowing exactly what hardware you’re developing for versus developing for an array of different combinations 🙂

Um… Never mind the graphics card – an i7 for low detail, sub-1080p? GTFO.

Filthy console port?

might not be a console port, but yeah blame on the console port.

Its still tech 5, can’t be that demanding surely? It looks on par with the new wolf? I’d say the 560+ will run this game just fine.

Its all nice and dandy having games push high specs like that but I dont really see such a massive leap in fidelity nowadays. Almost as if games reached a certain limit of fidelity right now. Perfect example is the Shadow of Mordor. I checked out the HD textures comparison and really dont see much of a difference between that and high settings. Makes no sense to even get the HD textures.

Graphics can only improve so much I suppose
CypherGate

Yeah true, but I think the only thing that will really show differences in fidelity nowadays is lighting and art style.

There is a HUGE stepup with PBR and new rendering techniques. But Shadow of Mordor is not really a ‘next gen’ game. Something like Ryse on the other hand is next level shit. The UE4 tech demos blows any current game out of the water and that’s where we are headed.
CypherGate
October 3, 2014 at 10:25
Yup I know Ryse looks fantastic and the UE4 tech demos are crazy and its definitely a difference there, but the sad reality is that game companies get some form of budget to work with and most of them wont make full use of these graphic engines. Maybe in the next year or two when things are a lot cheaper.

Damn! And they wonder why most PC gamers wait for sales before buying games – it’s because all the money was spent on the rig to be able to play those games!

We got to the final boss level, was hard as hell but lotsa laughs. Luckily Guild and Nikolai was there to hold out hands most of the way. Got 5 ascendant energies and a legendary sinper rifle so far.

yea if you the one with thick wallet and so much bucks at the bank. but i agree with you. even now we could get 128Gb RAM for our pc. and 16Gb VGA Card..
