In a move that made locals rather displeased, Activision and Major League Gaming excluded South Africa from the Call of Duty Championships this year. The reasons for this decision were still never made public, so we can all assume it’s for whatever reason we choose to believe. However, people can still attend if they so wish, as spectators.
This was one of my biggest issues with the Championships last year. While the streams were excellent and had fantastic shout casting, there was very limited spectatorship. Only players, coaches, press and PR were actually allowed into the venue. This meant that at the finals, the vibe in the hall wasn’t as electric as it could have been. Most people were rooting for a team by default or just for the sake of it. The venue wasn’t designed for spectatorship and the whole event ended up feeling a bit flat. But not this year – now they’re finally listening to feedback from the public and letting spectators join in the fun. For a fee, of course.

Tickets go on sale from 17 February and attendees will need to be 18 or older. I hope that this makes the COD Champs a much more lively experience. It deserves to have the $1 million prize pool, but it needs more spectators to really bring it to life.

I’ll keep an eye out for the team I think will take. Probably stick to watching their matches on MLG and hopefully this time they don’t have as many streaming issues as last year
