While the core gameplay barely ever changes, I’ve always been enamoured with the visuals of the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm games. Hell, even the older games still look fantastic, but it’s the execution of such excellence by developer CyberConnect2 that has really made those games stand out as of late. And right now, I’m tripping balls after seeing the latest bit of footage. Although that might be a side effect of my medication no jutsu. BELIEVE IT!
Here’s the footage that I was talking about, which features a Super-Saiyan version of Naruto astride a gigantic frog with a sword while his buddies Sakura and Sasuke summon their own beasties. Again, the balls, they be tripping:
I’ve actually got some hope for the game beyond the pretty visuals, believe it or not. And that’s because the combat is getting retuned, as the development team have begun listening to the fan community. CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Maruyama spoke about this last year, emphasising a need to better incorporate story elements into the gameplay and retweak the combat mechanics to allow for a more strategic sense of combat.
And really, that’s what I want. I dig the combat I truly do, but a change is needed. And the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm combat mechanics benefit more from good timing than actual strategy. And that’s something which needs to be kept and added to. Just like in the comics, where brains, brawn and timing help make for the ultimate shinobi attack.
The game is out later this year, in the Northern fall on current-gen systems. It’s got a ton of characters as usual, and it’ll be wrapping up the massive Shinobi War at long-damn-last.
