With Peter Parker taking up his rightful place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (finally), it seems Sony is now turning their attention to a different web-slinger if the rumors are anything to go by. Heroic Hollywood‘s sources are suggesting that the still untitled animated Spider-Man feature that Sony and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are busy with will be featuring the popular Miles Morales as the main character.
Who is Miles Morales some of you may be asking? He’s the Spider-Man of Marvel’s Ultimate universe – a recently defunct Marvel Comics imprint set in an alternate, more contemporary universe). Miles is a half-black, half-Latino 13-year-old who took on the role of Spider-Man after Peter Parker’s death at the hands of the Green Goblin in 2011. With Hollywood clearly trying to shed a light on the inequality of race and gender bias that occurs with so many of the stars and projects they are involved in, this would be a great shift for Sony’s Spidey.
And why not? Morales’ Spider-Man is as much fun as Parker’s and the fresh new take will be a welcome one in my opinion. The character has also already built up quite the following outside of the comics by becoming a fan favourite with his appearances in Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man animated TV series.
Currently there are two working titles being thrown around, Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man and The Ultimate Spider-Man: Miles Morales, both of which is quite clear on who the movie is about. If this rumour is true, then I just hope that Sony do a better job with this movie than their last Spider-Man attempt.
Sony’s animated Spider-Man film is expected to debut on December 21, 2018.

Miles is a half-black, half-Latino. Almost sounds like the protagonist of Mafia 3
