It’s no secret that comic book adaptions are taking over the entertainment industry one format at a time, and for the most part it’s a great thing for fans of the genre. Especially with the slate of hits that we have been treated to, with the odd exception here and there (Yes Fantastic Four, I’m talking about you). For the most part however there are some excellent movies/series out there to properly feast your eyeballs on.
One of the most recent, of these and shooting his way straight to the top of my favorites list, is one I frustratingly cannot talk about due to signing an NDA before watching the movie yesterday (Kervyn will have his review up on Monday morning though). What I will say is when this inevitable mega-hit gets released, be sure to take a spare set of undies with you because your world will get rocked.
As for the rest, it is a list too long to mention but The Flash, Gotham, Daredevil, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: First Class/Days Of Future Past (take your pick) are but a few that truly stand out for me.
And one of the latest productions that I am excited to see is FX’s Legion. If you are unfamiliar with the story then this is a little breakdown just for you:
The Legion pilot introduces the story of David Haller, a man who may be more than human and who has struggled with mental illness since his teenage years. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he is confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real. In the comics, David is the son of X-Men founder Charles Xavier (aka Professor X) and Israeli Holocaust survivor Gabrielle Haller. The character first appeared in New Mutants No. 25 in March 1985.
So if FX bring the same high standard of quality and bigger budget to their upcoming X-Men Spinoff series Legion, the rumblings of my X-Jet really gets going! So far the team behind the scenes for the show is more than capable of bringing together a fantastic piece of television. Who are they you wonder? Well the show is in the hands of FX Productions and Marvel Television, with FXP overseeing production.
But it gets better, because Noah Hawley (Fargo) will be writing the pilot and serve as an executive producer alongside Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Wolverine), Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Superman Returns), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Martian) and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb (Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil) and Jim Chory (Daredevil) and if that doesn’t get you excited then this probably isn’t your type of TV.
The latest news regarding the show is the addition of three talented actors to star alongside female lead Rachel Keller in the form of Dan Stevens (The Guest, Downton Abbey), Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Rec) and Jean Smart (Fargo). Stevens, who has been rapidly becoming one of Hollywood’s most popular new leading men with his breakout role in The Guest, will be taking on the lead role of David Haller, while funny girl Plaza will play David’s troubled friend, with Smart playing the part of Melanie, a nurturing, demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods.
There’s certainly a lot of potential to tell a truly mind-bending comic book story with Legion and the cast certainly have the acting chops to pull it off, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Production on Legion begins in March.
