Over the last few weeks you wouldn’t have been able to swing a teenage boy with the proportional strength, speed and agility of a spider up in the internet without hitting at least a couple new set pics for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We’ve seen everything from Jamie Foxx’s nerd to Na’vi transformation to Mary Jane getting her frump on, and now a couple new pics have appeared that show Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy just lounging around on set.
Innocent enough at first glance, but it could be that they’re giving away a whole lot more.
Now I’m pretty sure that after 40 years, the statutes of spoiler limitations has long since expired, but just in case you’re one of the 7 people who have never heard of this classic story, I need to warn you to look out for your friendly neighbourhood…
SPOILER-man, SPOILER man
SPOILS whatever a SPOILER can!
Spins a SPOILER, any size
Catches SPOILERS, just like flies!
Look, out! Here comes the SPOILER-man!
Right, now that we’ve got rid of those guys… In the classic Death of Gwen Stacy story, Green Goblin flings Spidey’s crush from the Brooklyn Bridge. Spider spins a web to catch her, which he does, but the resulting whiplash of her coming to a sudden stop snaps her neck, killing her. And when all of this happened, she was wearing a light green coat over a very distinct purple dress. Here’s the famous scene from the comics.
And now here are a couple of the new set pics (lots more over at SuperHeroHype).
Now, the fact that Ms Stone is clearly playing this up directly to the camera could mean that this is all intentional and director Marc Webb is actually just setting us up for one giant psych out. Or it means that Gwen is actually going to bite the bullet a bit earlier in the planned trilogy than we previously anticipated (Emma Stone has indicated previously that she is going to die though, but later on). Does this mean that Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn aka Green Goblin will also have a bigger role to play in the second installment?
It was sort of expected that ASM2 would see Jamie Foxx’s Electro (and possibly Paul Giamatti’s Rhino) take villainous centre stage while merely introducing Cooper as Spider-Man’s arch nemesis. His full green faced, maniacally cackling, pumpkin bomb tossing fury would then be held back for the final film, seeing as how he clearly has ties to the trilogy’s overarching plot of what happened to Peter Parker’s parents.
But could Webb and co be changing all that up? If so, that would mean that ASM2 would then feature 3 primary villains, and if you recall, the last time that happened we ended up with Tobey Maguire doing a song and dance skit dressed up like a member of My Chemical Romance.
So should we be worried about this? Co-writer Alex Kutzman certainly doesn’t think so, as he explained to Total Film.
“I think you have to go into it and say, ‘is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever’. We would never, ever, ever dare to do anything other than what felt like it was organic to the flow of the story.
“[A] lot of consideration has been given to the structure of it, so hopefully, when you see it, you’ll get the big picture.”
So no Green Goblin suddenly showing up in the final minutes of the film to toss poor Gwen off a bridge then? If not, does that mean that Webb and co are just pulling the webbing over some fanboy eyes with these pics in an effort to build up excitement for the film?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently busy shooting in New York City and will be swinging into cinemas on April 18, 2014.
