Independence Day will always be one of those landmark movies to me. It’s not the superb special effects, fantastic cast or wonderfully-paced story that makes it one of my all-time favourite flicks however.

It’s the fact that for the first time ever, this was a movie that showed off just how screwed humanity would be if intelligent life ever decided to come a’knockin’ on our solar system. When you saw New York, Washington DC and other capital cities properly destroyed in one massive genocidal scene, you knew that the game had changed. You knew that victory was looking slimmer than Nick’s chances at resisting cupcakes.

But hey, mankind won and the day was saved in the end (SPOILER FOR A 20 YEAR OLD MOVIE). So where does that leave our civilisation, now that our population got a massive numbers decrease as alien technology fell down from the sky? According to director Roland Emmerich, that was just the first invasion wave and there’s a lot more to come in the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, as he explained to Collider:

Independence Day resurgence

“Well, it’s only like one of the hives, like kind of moving around. [Laughs] What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too. It’s not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one. Also it’s a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back. We had 20 years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight.”

That sounds like a fantastic idea already, and I’m chomping at the bit to see the kind of defenses that the world has developed since then. Emmerich wrapped up shooting on the flick last month, so it’s firmly in the post-production phase right now.

Independence Day: Resurgence will star Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. It’ll be out in June next year. Here’s the synopsis for it:

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
