The D.I.C.E awards are a little different from the usual game awards you see every year. Awarded by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, they’re the closest we’ve got in the industry to the Oscars or the Emmies, making them just somewhat more official – because they’re peer voted. The academy’s made up of publishers, developers and members of the Independent Game Developers Association; the people who make and release games, judging the games that have been released. And according to them, Dragon Age: Inquisition was last year’s best game. It wasn’t, however, the biggest winner.

In fact, it was only nominated in two categories. That accolade instead goes to Monolith’s Shadow of Mordor, which won 8 of the 9 categories it was nominated in – with Dragon Age usurping it for the crown. Other big winners were Destiny (where’s the award for most potential?) and Hearthstone, with 4 and 2 awards respectively.

Here’s the full list of nominations, with the winners in each category in bold.

What do you think? Deserved winners? I’m just happy that Mario Kart 8’s won best driving game, to be honest – because it’s certainly the most fun – and I think it’s the emphasis on fun that’s missing from games at the moment.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
