Both Ed Helms and Owen Wilson have been hit or miss for me with their most recent comedic efforts, but when they’re on point, it’s usually quite hilarious. Based on the first trailer for upcoming R-rated comedy Bastards, I’m still not sure on which end of the hit or miss scale this one will end up.

I do know it also stars the always awesome JK Simmons though, who along with NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw play potential fathers of Helms and Wilson’s sappy characters. I say potential, because their mom (played by Glenn Close) apparently did not keep track of who she had adult relations with. Oy vey. Cue up a road trip as Helms and Wilson go to find their paternal heritage, learn waaaaaay too much about their mom’s colourful past and maybe even kidnap and nearly accidentally kill a hitchhiker or two.

Check it out below.

Bastards follows Peter and Kyle Reynolds (Ed Helms and Owen Wilson), two brothers whose eccentric mother (Glenn Close) raised them to believe their father had died when they were young. When they discover this to be a lie, they set out to find their real father, learning more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know.

Bastards was directed by Lawrence Sher, cinematographer on The Hangover franchise in which Helms also starred. The cast of this movie is rounded out by Katt Williams, June Squibb, Kate Aselton, and Ving Rhames. Bastards is scheduled for release on January 27, 2017.
