We’re just a few weeks away from the high-octane remake of The Magnificent Seven exploding onto the big screen, and in order for us to get to know the characters they’ve released a series of character promo videos where the actors give a brief rundown of their characters – with some new footage to boot.

In case you’ve missed it or never watched the original, here’s the official plot synopsis:

With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier).

As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

So let’s hear from the men themselves just who they are:

As much as I like many of the actors here, I’m just not sure about this remake. As someone who grew up watching westerns and is a fan of the genre, and of which original The Magnificent Seven was one of the highlights, I’m not sold on the updated tone and visuals of the remake – it comes across from the trailers as too bombastic and quippy for my tastes.

It looks very similar to the very recent Ben-Hur situation – with a beloved original getting a punched-up remake – and flopping badly. And while I don’t expect this to flop due to the seat-selling names attached (Nick’s already bought out the entire cinema so he can have someone whose name sounds similar to ‘Crisp Rat’ all to himself), I don’t expect this movie to set the box office on fire either.

We’ll see soon enough though as The Magnificent Seven is due for release on 23 September. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, it stars all of the above as well as Haley Bennett, Peter Sarsgaard, Luke Grimes and Matt Bomer.
