Guardians 2

IIIIIIIIIIII’M…HOOKED ON A FEELING! I don’t think there’s any superhero film that has surprised me as much as Guardians of the Galaxy. From that catchy opening scene which mixed tomb raiding with the fine tunes of Redbone to a third act stand-off that started with a dance-off and ended with a big bang. A fantastic film, and one whose sequel I’ve been looking forward to ever since I saw lil’ Groot bust some moves.

And it’s getting that sequel! The titular Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 reunites the core cast of Star Lord (Who?), Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket with a fresh new face: Mantis. Check her out below in this concept art from Andy Park:

Guardians 2

Wondering who this Mantis character is that Pom Klementieff is playing? Well lemme fill ya in! Mantis is a half-Vietnamese, half-German hero with psychic skills to pay the bills, martial arts kickassery and a few ties to the Kree empire. She’s also the daughter of morally shifty Libra and has served on both the Guardians and the Avengers teams. “She has never really experienced social interaction,” Executive Producer Jonathan Schwartz said to Entertainment Weekly.

Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.

Also glimpsed in that art above is a tinier version of Groot. But he’s not the exact same version who sacrificed himself in the first film. Instead, this Groot is apparently a clean slate for the lumbering and patient piece of fatal flora. “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot,” Schwartz said.

He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is out next year on May 5, and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell. A sneak peek will be seen next week at the San Diego Comic Con.
