I would like to tell you that Kidnap is just a movie about a little boy having an epic afternoon sleep session, but alas some ne’ver-do-wells have actually snatched said boy. Unfortunately for them, the kid’s mother happens to be Halle Berry. These crooks may have seen Catwoman and thought this mom would spend all day playing really bad basketball with dudes while making feline noises, but clearly they didn’t see 2013’s The Call in which Berry played a rather effective every-woman who also has to rescue a minor from some bad people.
Based on this first trailer for Kidnap, director Luis Prieto (most notable for helming the English-language remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Pusher) seems to be channeling that same sense of edge-of-your seat B-grade suspense thrills here that Berry and co had in The Call. In the latter movie, that was enough to overcome its numerous faults to just make for a mindless, heart-pumping ride. And it looks like Kidnap could do the same. Who knows? Maybe Berry has found her career-twilight niche with these movies. As long as she stops playing superheroes, I’m all for it.

Kidnap is scheduled for release on December 2, 2016.
