No, you don’t have deja vu. This is not just a glitch in the Matrix. While we already showed you the current box office leaders yesterday, and will continue to do so every week, that is only for the all-important (so they keep claiming) US domestic market. But what about closer to home? Who is ruling the local cinema roost?

Click through to find out just who your local box office champions were for the weekend of 22 to 24 November 2013.

In news that should not be surprising to anybody with at least 3 out of 5 functional senses, the Jennifer Lawrence led mega sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire set local screens ablaze, burning Thor: The Dark World right down into second place. Note to self: If we ever invent an elemental version of Rock, Paper, Scissors, remember that fire beats thunder.

Catching Fire’‘s entry at the top spot also means that local Afrikaans musical As Jy Sing slips down to third place, after debuting at the top of the heap two weeks ago.

Here’s how the rest of the standings look (unfortunately, it appears that our sources are a bit slow in sending through their actual box office takings, so you’ll have to do with just rankings for now until I can add them in later).

  • THE HUNGER GAMES : CATCHING FIRE
  • THOR : THE DARK WORLD (incl 3D)
  • AS JY SING
  • JUSTIN & THE KNIGHTS OF VALOUR (incl 3D)
  • CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
  • KHUMBA (incl 3D)
  • BAGGAGE CLAIM
  • BUTLER, THE
  • GRAVITY (incl 3D)
  • THE FAMILY

The other new entries for the week, Justin & The Knights of Valour and Captain Phillips dropped in at no’s 4 and 5 respectively, forcing local animation production Khumba to tumble down from second place all the way to no. 6.

  1. “The other new entries for the week, Justin & The Knights of Valour and Captain Phillips dropped in at no’s 3 and 4 respectively”

“Justin” needs italics and your numbering doesn’t follow. Shouldn’t it be “4 and 5 respectively” since the Afrikaans musical is at no 3?

Oof. That’s kind of embarrassing. Thanks for the spot. Clearly I should rush articles less.
