New images from Dredd. This time with explosions!

If there was one film this year that I am completely undecided on, it has to be Peter Travis’ Judge Dredd R-rated reboot, Dredd. On the one hand, IT’S JUDGE F#$@ING DREDD, is being written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) and it has a whole lot of people in it whom I really like. People like Karl Urban, Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby. Also it was shot down here in Cape Town, which is instant brownie points, I believe.

On the other hand though, I still have to attend bi-weekly therapy sessions to get over the travesty that was the 1995 Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd film. You cut me deep, Sly. You cut me real deep.

Until a trailer drops though, and we get a proper look at the film, I guess I’ll just have stay stuck in geek limbo. But at least we have a couple new images to tide us over until then.

Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

It’s not a character from the comics that I know off, but they did go through a lot of judges. I looked at the credits and Judge Anderson is in there, so maybe we’ll get some Psy-Ops action. It was criminal that she wasn’t in the Stallone movie (and what they did to Judge Hershey should have resulted in jail time). Judge Guthrie is also canon and his story might give a hint at the plot of this film (

Those images look awesome. So do the costumes. Still trying to not get my hopes up, but these make it hard…

Yeah, I’m in the same boat. I really want it to be good, but every time I even think of the possibility, an image of Rob Steiner flashes into my head, and I just break out in tears.

Schneider was the least of my problems with that film. It pretty much chewed up all the essential bits of the comic and spat it out in a PG-13 summer movie mess.

Just give me a Dredd who never takes his helmet off, is tough on the causes of crime, as well as the causes of causes, a few explosions and Rob Schneider dying a horrible bullet-riddled death within ten seconds of his cameo, and I’ll be happy.

I’ll say this. That’s as close as real life has or ever will come to the source material
