We’ve seen some incredible re-imaginings of popular animated films of late into live-action special effects laden epics, with the recent The Jungle Book film standing out as a technical marvel. And this latest one, also from Disney, seems to be working the same kind of powerful special effects to mesmerize and captivate us all, in the retelling of the 1977 classic Pete’s Dragon.
And don’t just take my word for it, we have a trailer of the film below for you to feast your eyes on and see how it looks for yourself. The remake is directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) and tells the story of the special bond between an orphaned boy, Pete, and his best friend, Elliott, who just happens to be a dragon.
This film which will blend live-action with well-crafted CGI stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Grace, a park ranger who discovers the existence of Elliott; 10-year-old Oakes Fegley (This is Where I Leave You) as Pete; Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) as Jack, a local mill owner; Karl Urban (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Jack’s brother, Gavin; Oona Laurence as Natalie, the young girl who befriends Pete; and Robert Redford as Grace’s father. Not to mention the folks at Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital in New Zealand who are bringing the dragon to life in incredible detail.
This trailer seems to keep a lot of the special magic from the original film in place while still finding some fresh ways of telling the story. It look like it has the potential to maintain Disney’s current record of strong blockbuster hits and and sure to appeal to viewers young and old.
Pete’s Dragon hits local screens on 12 August 2016.
