Nothing to see here, folks. Seriously – unless you were holding out for John Goodman going insane or the British version of Cool Runnings (or a robot dog), you’ll have to make the same choices at your local cinema as you did last week.

  • 01. BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (Incl 3D) (LW: 1)
  • 02. KUNG FU PANDA 3 (Incl 3D) (LW: 2)
  • 03. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (LW: 4)
  • 04. ZOOTROPOLIS (Incl 3D) (LW: 3)
  • 05. DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT (Incl Imax) (LW: 5)
  • 06. LONDON HAS FALLEN (LW: 6)
  • 07. EDDIE THE EAGLE (NE)
  • 08. 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (NE)
  • 09. MODDER EN BLOED (LW: 7)
  • 10. ROBODOG (NE)

(LW : Last Week; NE: New Entry)

  • 01. BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (Incl 3D) (LW: 1)

This superhero saga is becoming an interesting test case in the market: despite some critical hatred, it’s not doing badly. It’s not doing great, but will not create a massive budget deficit at the studio – which is a win with these big budget monstrosities. But from what friends tell me, if you ignore the media and comic book fans, this is actually fun to watch.

  • 02. KUNG FU PANDA 3 (Incl 3D) (LW: 2)

Also going nowhere is the latest in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. It’s actually fun and – no – those small pandas aren’t his kids.

  • 03. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (LW: 4)

The wedding antics of fat greeks (I honestly don’t know what this movie is about) gives some salvation for the older crowd not keen on being bombarded with dog-wagging special effects. Their patronage sees it take a step up from third last week.

  • 04. ZOOTROPOLIS (Incl 3D) (LW: 3)

Apparently this movie is encouraging Chinese fans to buy a rare African fox which can’t be house-trained, domesticated or keep quiet at night. Remember people: just because it’s cute in a movie doesn’t make it so in real life. Like the owl. Apparently the owl is a real ass and not that nice guy from Winnie The Pooh.

  • 05. DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT (Incl Imax) (LW: 5)

Allegiant pulls out of its dive and manages to sit stable at fifth for a second week. But overall it’s still a financial crater and splitting the final book was clearly a big miscalculation.

  • 06. LONDON HAS FALLEN (LW: 6)

Old school action movies really don’t surface as often as they used to, at least on the charts, so it’s nice to see this fight-or-flight tale stay put at sixth.

  • 07. EDDIE THE EAGLE (NE)

Eddie-The-Eagle-Movie-1

The story of an underdog skier taking part in the Olympics is, according to the actual Eddie the Eagle, about only 10 percent true. But everyone likes a feel-good story, though with a seventh spot debut this is not bound to stay around for long.

  • 08. 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (NE)

The tense and mysterious J.J. Abrams project (funny how nobody remembers the directors he uses) finally arrives in South Africa, but its lacklustre eighth spot debut is really disappointing.

  • 09. MODDER EN BLOED (LW: 7)

This period drama about rugby, Brits and Boers is failing to capture the Afrikaans audience, charting a trend that they are not interested in dramas or overbearing historical fiction. Back to the rom-coms and slapstick, people!

  • 10. ROBODOG (NE)

robot dog

Dog dies, so genius dad builds new dog. This sounds a lot like a straight-to-DVD Disney movie from the eighties.

  • LAST ROUND

Local juggernaut Happiness Is A Four Letter Word finally bows out after what may be the best performance for a local English-language movie yet. Christian drama Risen also steps down following a lukewarm run. But shed a tear for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which fell over harder than a zombie trying to take the stairs.

James

A total movie glutton, nothing is too bad or too obscure to watch, unless it's something like The Human Centipede. If you enjoyed that, there is something wrong with you. But bless you anyway - even video nasties need love...
