SA’s Weekend Top 10 Chart: Jungle Brothers

No surprises here: The Jungle Book crashed into box office chats everywhere, dislodging whoever was holding on for dear life. That mainly means Batman vs Superman has been decisively knocked off any perch it may have held.

The comic book movie has been limping along, keeping a straight face in smaller markets. But it has now been bumped down and is like to make a crawl for the exit. But not everything suffered under the foot of the jungle: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and Zootropolis both stayed put, leaving it to Kung Fu Panda 3 to drop a painful three spots. London Has Fallen took a single step down, while local high-budget drama Modder en Bloed is really not finding the audience it had hoped for, slumping down a spot to the exit row of 10th.

The chart has made room for four new movies. The Jungle Book obviously leads the pack, while at 6th the Kevin Costner/Ryan Reynolds thriller Criminal get a lacklustre start. Local audiences don’t care much for such thrillers, so it will be gone soon. At 8th is the rare sight of a horror, a genre we last saw a lot more of back in 2015. The Forest bases itself in the creepy suicide forest at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji. Finally, High Strung is the tale of ‘sparks flying’ between a ballerina and concert violinist, so watch that if you like your romantic comedies to be about over-achieving beautiful people.

Gone, gone, gone is Allegiant, falling away dramatically from its 5th position last week. Sports dramady Eddie The Eagle also failed to make any local friends, ditto for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which both only got a week on the chart. the same for Robodog, though it’s a surprise that even charted in the first place.

A total movie glutton, nothing is too bad or too obscure to watch, unless it's something like The Human Centipede. If you enjoyed that, there is something wrong with you. But bless you anyway - even video nasties need love...
