Simon Pegg wants you write a thesis for THE WORLD'S END

One film on my radar this year, is The World’s End. It’s a trilogy-capper of sorts, rounding out several years of work from director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Starting out with the romance-horror genre in Shaun of the Dead, the trio then went on to make buddy cop film in the heart in the heart of rural England with Hot Fuzz. Both great films, and both of them linked in the trilogy that was promised to fans.

The World’s End is the final film in that threesome. And according to Pegg, the combination of all those films is going to be something that university students will write about for years to come.

Speaking to the Blake London site about the ties between the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy, Pegg had this to say;

[Edgar Wright and I] make comedies and both love genre cinema but neither Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz are parodies. The World’s End isn’t a send up in any way, in fact, we’ve gone out of our way not to populate the film with references to other movies, in order to avoid that label.

So don’t expect The World’s End to be a satire on slacker films then. Based on a group of friends attempting to finish an epic pub crawl during the actual end of the world, Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan and Paddy Considine finds themselves facing harsh truths and grwoing up in the eye of the apocalypse, while trying their hardest to reach the final pub before they get a taste of apocalypse now.

“The theme that will bind the three films together is a preoccupation with the struggle of the individual against the collective,” Pegg said. “Shaun vs. zombies, Angel vs. the NWA, Gary King vs. (???).” No idea what that question mark means, but maybe Pegg let slip something there that he shouldn’t have.

Thematically, it will all make sense when the three films can be viewed consecutively. This sounds lofty but they form a dialectic sequence, which I hope film students will write essays about. Shaun of the Dead = evolution,Hot Fuzz = devolution, World’s End = revolution. Jesus, you can take the boy out of Bristol University drama department…

Oh man, that’s going to be a whole mess of fan theories now that he has let loose that statement. Anyway,The World’s End is out in August, which should give people regretting that they signed up for a media studies course plenty of time to hammer out a thesis or two.
